What do you think Donald Trump's policies toward Japan will actually be like, concerning U.S. bases in Japan, whether Japan should have nuclear weapons and tariffs on Japanese imports into the U.S., s

I heard nasty ol' little hands said, "We're going to relocate the airbase to Henoko and we're going to make the Okinawans pay for it. Let me to you its going to be done bigly and it will be beautiful, believe me. Just brilliant and grand. "
That should rile some people up.. I'm still disgruntled by his win.

My worst-case-scenario-brain says "He'll pull out everything leaving China who has been waiting at the gates for this moment to just come crashing in to Tokyo". Otherwise, I'm totally clueless.

In this "post-truth" world that Trump himself has done so much to help cement into place it is really hard to know what he will do. When he resiles on his promises will his erstwhile supporters riot? Or will they praise his pragmatism? Hard to know. But now promises are like clouds in the sky and we make of them whatever we like. It's just about who can lie with conviction.

Japan imports very few cars into the US. Most are made there. But once Trump settles in, I'm pretty sure he'll just go with the flow and nothing will change. He just wanted to "be president", not actually do anything. He is already being put in place by the Republican leaders.

Trump clearly has a longstanding chip on his shoulder when it comes to Japan. I suspect it might have something to do with one or more business negotiations/deals of his involving Japan having gone bad back in the 1980s.
So having said that, I think he will use the bully pulpit to seek vindication with respect to Japan as a nation, possibly by jacking up the price Japan pays for hosting the bases, and maybe by pulling out U.S. forces altogether.

I think Japan needs nukes even if Trump commits to the defense alliance. His constant changing of positions and lies during the campaign make his commitments meaningless

Will just make Japan pay. and they will just print more yen to do so.

Commitments??
Trump doesn't commit to anything except him making money. Beyond that he only manipulates others and shifts his position to best fit his own personal agenda.

Is there a Trump Tower in Tokyo yet? If he gets one of those, it will make him happy and he will let things be.

Hopefully he does something about the bases in Okinawa, especially the Agent Orange.

Will probably try to even out the trade with Japan thru tariffs (if needed) etc. I would expect some change with the Okinawa bases around the more crowded areas -at the very least a solid plan will be made.

The US already has tariffs on imported cars and even a 50% tariff on imported pickup trucks. It's amazing how uninformed people are....
