To be honest, I think it is practically irrelevant in the context of the modern, professionalised games. "It's all about the taking part," is a quaint throwback to a bygone age, which we now dredge up occasionally in a futile attempt to tone down the competitiveness and naked nationalism.

It looks very well sugar coated wherever the media camera lens is made to focus although not sure whether that thing called "sportsmanship" is coming from the heart of the individual participants though.
For example the never ending doping scandal is a reality we cannot ignore after all.
Personally its a boring sight as a spectator. Competitive approach with a little bit of chirping is always exciting to see. It also gives a reflection of the culture in sports.
Just my perception.

I'm only aware of three instances of bad sportsmanship so far, though there have undoubtedly been more. One is the Egyptian judoka who wouldn't shake his Israeli competitor's hand; another was U.S. goalie Hope Solo's outburst after the team lost; and the third was an Irish boxer's tirade against the judges after he lost. Of course, the question of the level of judging is another topic altogether, so the boxer's anger might have been justified.

@Brainiac: Each of these incidents have two side of stories and are debatable. At least the good thing is that these incidents are not related to doping so far. These kind of events will happen in every Olympics for sure.

A lot of it seems scripted and as shallow as it gets, as if it's only there because people are watching

The level of sportsmanship is good so long America is at the top (leading medal list).
