What do you think of women-only carriages on trains in some of Japan's cities?

There are ALWAYS way more non mashers than mashers.

Tell the gropers to keep their hands to themselves. Nothing to be scared of. Anyone who would grope someone surreptitiously in a crowded place has to be a coward. Nothing to be scared of!

Some delicate types are very uncomfortable with them. So uncomfortable that they have to get onto one of the carriages and annoy passengers.

This is just a quick fix solution that won't deal with the problem in the long term.

Half the commuters are men, so they should offer one male-only carriage to balance the overcrowding. And they should get to the root of the crimes. Groping will still occur on the other carriages. And not all women will fit in that single carriage.

It doesn't deal with the long-term problem, but it does deal with the current situation, so personally I think the female-only carriages are fair. Sure, many women will want to ride the male only carriages, as a statement for change, as a message to the world that women shouldn't need to be afraid. And these women are not only right, people who think like that are necessary to move society forward. But that said, other women are just people who want to go to work, would rather not have to worry about being groped, and don't have the time/energy/inclination to fight the battle to send the message. This is fair too, and the existence of a women-only carriage is meant to let them do this.

Now that all said, I've never been a fan of no equivalent male-only carriages. For regular cars that are not segregated by gender, women have to worry about men who get gropey, but men also have to worry about women who would wrongly accuse them, either for nefarious reasons, or just mistakenly mis-identifying the person who they thought groped them. For this reason, men should also have access to a car where they can just relax and go to work without having to worry about this. I can't tell you how many times I've been riding the train, with one hand grabbing the strap, and the other at shoulder level, simply to make it clear that if any groping was going on, it wasn't by me. I'd rather not have to think about that. If there was a male-only car, I'd ride it for sure.

I think it's a sad condemnation of a society that should know better.

Nothing new about this problem ---in my Grandmothers youth (early 1900s) most women wore hats with pins 4-6 inches long which they could whip out and jab any pests--a sure way to painfully discourage them. Gropers, frotteurs, flashers, (and other deviates) have always been with us and probably always will be in many countries. If female only carriages are the answer so be it.

You don't solve problems by running away from them. Female only carriages are just a way of avoiding facing the problem. Deal with it. Let the guy know you don't appreciate being groped by a stranger. Laugh at the guy! Make fun of him! He's not man enough to actually communicate with a girl, he's a wimp, a total weed.

ineffectual harassment laws and a population that doesn't care to stop

This is what you end up with when you have a society of victims (and bystanders) who won't stand up for themselves/each other.
