North Korean Crisis, BP Oil Spill, European sovereign debt crisis, Pakistan floods, Icelandic volcano eruption....but i think above all, the Haiti Earthquake.
There was so much happening internationally that it all blurs together. Maybe the Chile mine rescue stands out as a rare bit of welcome good news in what otherwise seems to have been one disaster after another.
The biggest news micro-domestically (ie chez cleo) was the birth of a beautiful bouncing baby granddaughter.
intl: definitely wikileaks exposures! domestic (I presume it is meant in Japan?): maybe not news but we now have a confirmation that political elite cannot within its midst create any progressive or comprehensive movement that would make a difference for average citizen. this being definitely proven by DPJ and others govt's record in 2010. i mean, the "opposition" wins power after what, forever, and then this?! pft
This year? We were all blinded by myopia long ago. As most are saying, it is just a blur.
The only news that matters is that another year of environmental destruction has taken place.. domestically and especially internationally. Humanity has lived beyond its means yet again, and the Kyoto accord, which was a band aid at best, is going into the bucket.
Wars and rumors of war are increasingly centering on resources and infrastructure, not ideology. Disasters are highlighting the vulnerability of human systems to things like rain and snow, which seem just a tad different from usual patterns. Just different enough to cause billions in damage on about a weekly basis.
In 50 years, the environment and access to resources will be the only thing that matters. Kim Jong Il will be dust. The Chilean miners will have a story to tell their grandkids. The rest of us will be living in a different world. Who knows whether it will be food crises, economic crises, energy, minerals, war or warming, or all of the above? The big story is that nobody really cares. And the people of 2060 will curse us apathetic souls of 2010 for being distracted by ... whatever nonsense made the papers this year.
The vicious attack by the Israeli navy against an unarmed humanitarian aid flotilla in international waters in the middle of the night, resulting in the murder of at least nine. The flotilla was trying to deliver desperately needed medical materials and other stuff that Israel prevents entry to Gaza by an illegal and brutal blockade.
I'd say the Israeli navy courageously stopping the left-wing terrorist flotilla. The left-wing terrorists were smuggling arms and support to Palestinian terrorists under the false guise of "aid". Even Egypt blocks access to the Palestinian terrorists.
