What do you think will be the biggest technological development of the coming decade, so that when we look back in 10 years' time, we'll wonder how we ever did without it?

Holographic 3D images projected in our living rooms to replace tv.

Heck, Negishi and Susuki's Nobel Prize winning advances in Chemistry. Development of their ideas with Carbon in 10 years could be monumental to life on Earth.

It's impossible to say because technological innovation is happening so fast. Look back to 10 yeas ago. We didn't have iPads or iPhones or e-readers, though I never wonder how we ever did without those particular products (I grew up in an era without those items, cell phones, email and the Internet, and we all managed quite nicely). It will probably be some device that is useful to all people of all generations, including the older generation, not just computer-savvy people - and hopefully something that is not anti-social like a lot of the gadgetry we have today.

Transporter is the oorrect answer. Good job! Sell the airline stocks. Robocop will retire from sumo. He's my hero now and will always be great regardless of his record!

Common sense.

You, or someone you know, will be Julian Assange for 15 minutes, and sometimes purely by accident.

technological development is already far more advanced than our political and social sciences in general so the only thing i would like the coming decade to bring is closure of that gap. so that we can wonder how could we ever have lived in a society that didn't recognize our right to education, right to decent available housing, right to a living wage job, right to refuse to be mobilized to war etc. as basic and inalienable all human rights!

Wikileaks and the like. Whether you love or hate 'em, it's changed things forever. The funny thing is, is that what they've "leaked" is nothing really new. But now it's public view, without having to go to all the trouble of reading a book (Lord help us!).
The network news and mainstream news is shait, CNN, FOX, BBC, whatever. Liberal and Conservative has nothing to do with it. Finally, we get the facts and we can make whatever judgment we want.

What?! If you think of the biggest tech. development of the coming decade, then in 10 years time looking back, would be then....wouldn't it?

I am looking forward to an era without cables, only than will I think how greatly the world has become. Hoovering without constantly falling over them, no more cable mess behind the TV and telephone...I am dreaming.
Zenny11
No more cables sounds nice, except for all the electronic transmission that bombard you constantly to transfer data between devices.
Zenny11
Hope the can improve the distances for recharging stations for like cel-phones, etc.
So that they can be recharged anywhere within the room.
JayJayE
Yeah, as a musician I would say no cables would be nice. They're getting there but still a ways to go. I can't tell you how annoying it is to set up a show while sorting through Spaghetti!

We`ll wonder how we did without ELECTRIC CARS in TEN years time.I mean right now no one wants to talk about electric cars.Right?
JayJayE
Electric cars, plus Water powered cars, hydrogen fuel cells and the like have been around for decades. It's not a matter of technical no-how, more of economics.
JayJayE
sorry, know-how, not no-how. :(
Fadamor
This goes along with the electric cars, but the real innovation will be the improvement of the car's batteries (which is the reason they're so expensive now).
We'll also see shopping centers and other businesses providing parking spots for electric cars only. Each spot will have a metered power tap where you can pay for X hours of charging time through your debit/credit card. This will give rise to the locking electrical access door on the car to prevent someone parking next to you and unplugging the tap from your car and plugging it into theirs.

LOL. But it's true. The Japanese need it so badly....otherwise some industry still need to hire foreign expertise to survive...

It will be a whole new energy source. Something that we are not even looking at right now, or just in the early stages of researching. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Greater advances in food technology, like GMOs. We need to feed the ever increasing world.

If I knew that, I'd be rich.

As for electric cars, in ten years time you'll realise just how EXPENSIVE they are to run when you get your electricity bills, or have to recharge at the station once every two or three days!! Not to mention the amount of coal and oil needed to produce the electricity to power the charging stations! No one mentions these huh!
I doubt there'll be any great invention in the next decade, but perhaps in another 2 or 3 decades. This seems to be inline with trends of new technology every 20 or 30 years.
Fadamor
Coal and Oil? I guess Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, and Nuclear power will disappear in the next decade? Or did you forget to mention those on purpose, huh?
