Eat anything before sleeping and your body is busy trying to digest it. Eat nothing six hours before going to bed and you'll sleep better.

Just a bit of whisky works for me.

A coupla tall cans of strong chu-hai and it's lights out ZZZZZZZ. Then I wake the next day completely refreshed.

Nuts( almonds, sunflower seeds, cashews). They are magnesium rich food, and magnesium is known to ease anxiety and is recommended to insomniacs. Bananas are good too, but they are good diuretics too, and if you are with tiny bladder like me- forget it.

Camomile tea.

Sounds a bit drastic to me. I simply can not not have food say from 6pm to midnight and fall asleep. I would be hungry by 9-10pm. Read that dairy products help. Some yogurt as night time snack sounds ok to me (and more realistic).

A large cup of Warm milk with a dash of whiskey and / or a 1/2 teaspoon raw natural honey about 15 minutes before the head hits the pillow does the trick!

Just water. And not too much otherwise you'll have to get up earlier than planned.

A generous late lunch and no dinner.

Not food or drink but ... exercise. Get plenty of it, and you'll sleep like a log. (I guess you-know-what counts too, but this is Japan.)

Avoid snacks before going to bed, particularly grains and sugars because they increase blood sugar and inhibit sleep, and when blood sugar drops too low you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. So instead eat a high-protein snack and a small piece of fruit several hours before bed to provide the L-tryptophan needed to produce melatonin and serotonin.

I recommend soaking yourself in a hot tub for at least 10 minutes.
This have been tested and verified by doctors.

Easy.
Stop drinking caffeine.
Drink decaf coffee and Rooibos Tea.

Anise milk, a Dutch drink, consisting of hot milk flavored with anise seed and sweetened with sugar. This won't go down well in the heat of summer though, so at that time I comfort myself with cold buttermilk. Zzz.

Really good quality hot chocolate, though probably not in the summer. A splash of good Demerara rum is quite nice in the hot chocolate!
Nessie
Exercise, like Tessa said.

A big dinner, 6 cans of craft beer, 6 shots of Yamazaki and a good wank usually sees me sleep deeply.

Most Doctors advise is no food/snack for 2hrs before sleeping, works for me.
But than I never had a problem falling asleep as I tend to keep a daily rhythm.
Kabukilover
Herb tea, no food and avoid political stimulation.

Celestial Seasonings' Sleepytime tea with honey zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Melatonin. It kickstarts your body's "time to go to sleep" clock.

No food shortly before sleeping is going to help you in any way whatsoever. In fact, it'll keep you up or keep your sleep from being deep and doing what it is intended to do.
As for drink, herb tea or water, and not too much of either or you'll be getting up to hit the washroom. Caffeine or alcohol are detrimental to sleep.
