What sort of a future do you think sumo has, in view of the latest scandal over illegal gambling?

I believe there will be some dust clouds for a while, but after it settles down, everything will be back to the way it was.

The future will be the same as the past - Corrupt!

I am disappointed for my son who almost worships sumo and many of the wrestler's. I think that sumo will weather this storm but it is going to take a lot longer to erase the memory than some people may think.

Sumo has been in the spotlight too much recently for the actions of some of it's wrestler's and this just adds one more burden that the Association has to deal with to regain fan support.

It's not like they were gambling on sumo. Gambling on horses or boat races is fine but not baseball?

Probably should have just placed bets on line with foreign sites.

Disillusioned is right. So long as the sports ministry and NHK play softball with the JSA, nothing will change. It will simply muddle its way along into irrelevance.

This scandal sure makes it likely that match fixing has been happening as well, sumo has always been corrupt, the yakuza have always been involved, its hilarious seeing the elders pretend this isnt rampant. Sumo is dead for me, I was a big fan on the early-mid 90s then lost interest & now I dont give a rats %$# about sumo

This stuff has been going for years, possibly centuries and it only now that it has come out. All the stable bashings, betting, yak involvement have always been a part of sumo. If they take that away they will just have a group of fat, smelly Japanese men rolling around in a dirt pen. The corruption makes the sport a lot more interesting.

I hope sumo can continue, but I'd rather see it die a quick death than to watch it slowly erode, with one scandal after the next.

It's Japan's national sport, of course it will continue. It is like asking whether baseball would disappear after McGwire admitted steroid use in 1998. Like I keep saying, no one seems to remember 17 year old Takashi Saito who was beaten to death in 2008. RIP Takashi. No one seems to remember the wrestlers caught smoking herb. No one seems to remember the match fixing allegations.

Yaocho (fixed bouts) will become all the rage!

Takashi, you're dead, who cares? Takashi, you're dead, who cares? Takashi, you're dead, who cares?
