I don't know why people make such big fuss over food/drinks to avoid before going to bed. I could eat and drink anything and yet still have a good night sleep. Exercise is the key word to it!
Alcohol is much to broad a drink to condemn it wholly. A herbal drink like Jagermeister or a straight Gin straight from the freezer might actually help calm down a stuffed stomach. What should be avoided are sugary drinks like chu-hai or the worst of all, Cointreau.
Alcohol!!! I had some drinks last night, slept terribly and now i have the worst headache. That's something we all know we should avoid...but, come on...its Christmas.
There is no food I should avoid before going to bed. Nothing stops me getting a good night's sleep.
Except that any food at all eaten within two hours of bedtime ends up sitting for all eternity on the hips, so folk who lie awake worrying about their weight/body shape should avoid ALL foods before bedtime.
I wish I knew. After all the Christmas parties I have been going to recently, my stomach rumbles all night. I am trying to stop eating and drinking at least two hours before I go to bed, but that is hard to do.
Assuming you're going to bed around midnite, don't eat anything after 8pm, and most drinks - if you're really thirsty, OK, have a sip of something, but no more than one glass or cup. I recommend hot cocoa, or in summer, chocolate milk.

Instant ramen, really fatty potato chips and meat don't go down too well with me just before bed. Coffee doesn't seem much of a difference.
A nice glass of wine 30min or so before bed helps me doze off.

Alcohol makes me drop straight off when I go to bed. It's a depressant, you know.

I agree, alcohol is not so good (I was used to wine nightcaps) and caffeine. Meat too - not good, will bring you nightmares. A glass of milk is nice.

I've heard that eating cheese before bed will help keep your teeth clean. Something about the bacteria in it. So ... no to sugar, yes to cheese.

Anything that contains chilli. I love chilli but I usually end up waking in the middle of the night from the stomache pain.
