Which industries do you think Japan still leads the world in?

Robotics; some automotive technology, particularly in collision-prevention systems; some cell phone contents; biotech is strong; cameras; high-speed rail tech; anime; toilets; vending machines; and lots more that I just can't think of right now.

High-speed train systems, automated toilets, printers, small cars, electronic transaction systems, vending machines...

Some of the material sciences, some polymers, medical-application imaging technologies, convenience stores (logistics), some areas of cancer research, IPS cell applications, etc.

Apparently Japan has a virtual global monopoly on zippers and PVC materials, although the margins are small

As end product consumers, it's easy for us to judge that Japan no longer makes the things we all used to love. TVs, cameras, cars, etc. But Japanese industrial goods are still on demand all over the world. For example, an iphone, 34% of the price goes to Japanese manufacturers.

Robotics, fuel cell automobiles, advanced materials and polymer research, high tech miniaturization (Japan's soon-to-be-retired Galapagos flip-phones are still hands-down the best in the world for their combination of seamless feature integration, ultra high-functionality, high-end photography, and durability, all packed into a space roughly the same size as any Motorola or Nokia phone possessing but one-fourth the functionality).

Japan's strength mostly comes in applied sciences, where new materials used to manufacture products all over the world, are developed, made and sold here. A few examples include chemicals used for producing all those rechargeable batteries found in all electronics, chemicals and paint used by armed forces all over to hide their equipment and aircraft from enemy radar. a whole bunch of critical components used in the manufacture of commercial aircraft. And since they are all patented no one else can manufacture them plus we all know that no one just shares patents.

Automobiles in general still though growth is slow, shipbuilding in most instances though they've lost ground to South Korea in the civil sector due to costs one should point out both technologically and scale-wise Japan is way ahead of the Koreans. Case in point for the last ten years Korea put out three submarines with German help, three destroyers with American help and one amphibious ship on it's own. Japan put out six submarines, four destroyers, three amphibious ships, two light helicopter carriers and one large helicopter carrier all by itself, for less money and with less problems. Even America, France and the UK can't compete. On that note Japan is also a leader in military technology and radar and for it's budget still has one of the most powerful armed forces. Chemicals, pharmaceutical and medical products (in the medical lab I work at all the best equipment and disposable supplies are Japanese). Video games, scientific and business methods like lean manufacturing and the Fujita scale, popular media, fashion, clothes, food and cuisine and powered exoskeletons. Of the couple of dozen power suit designs that work nearly half are in Japan and three or four are in production and sale. No one else is even close.

Appliances? As in household aplliances? Really? Did you mean electronics maybe? Which appliances are you referring to because IMO most Japanese household appliances are awful. They're very high-tech but are usually too small and not practical, durable, etc.
