Honest cops on the beat. My cousin is one and he's out there on patrol many nights, knowing he could get killed any time. He also has to do thankless jobs like tell parents their children have been killed in an accident, died of a drug OD and so on. And he's often on the scene of many fatal car wrecks. I don't know how these police officers keep their sanity. He says the two most disheartening aspects of the job are corruption at higher levels or when they are told not to arrest certain people, and when they are called to someone's noisy party and hear taunts of "pigs." Of course, when the mad axeman is in the garden, who do these same citizens call for help?

After police, I'd say nurses, the bomb squad and then teachers. The teaching profession is much maligned, but not by me. Two of my high school teachers probably had a greater influence on me than my parents. I think we all can think back to an influential teacher in our lives.

I think I'd agree with smartacus.

Might seem strange but I'd say Janitors. About the most unappreciated job in the world, yet I know I'm grateful for what they do every single day. I truly respect them doing a job that many folks would feel is beneath them, but many of those same folks sometimes sure could use a refresher on what it really means to do a job that really effects the quality of life in others and that person is never noticed except when he or she patiently waits to be acknowledged enough to vacuum underneath your desk and take your trash.

Thursdays is the day they vacuum at my office and I'm going to make sure I say thank you then because even I don't say it enough and I'm going to start to change that.

Japanese 'tarento.'

I appreciate their talent. They're called 'tarento' so they must have be talented, right?

Nurses.

I don't respect any professions. We are all humans are should all be equal. Doctors, lawyers and the likes do their jobs for both average salary so what more do they want?

JT Moderator, of course.

Surely the oldest profession in the world should get the most respect. This is Japan, after all!

Smartacus,

Excellent post. I'd add to my list volunteer workers. Okay, it isn't a profession, but anyone who gives up their time and talents for someone else with no expectation of reward has my respect.

hookers

None!

Depends on the sector... Public school teachers - sure (much braver than me) Private School - no Same goes for doctors and nurses

Police I have a hard time for - especially here. They all look so slovenly and unfit. Then again I probably don't see the good ones

"JT Moderator, of course"

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Agree with roughneck - nurses.

Tip-toes in silence 'round my bed And quiets the raindrops overhead With her everlasting smile, she stills my fever for awhile Oh, Nursie dear, I'm glad you're here - to brush away my pain.

Any profession for which 'Amakudari' post is available. NO to unthankful and volunteer job such as JT moderator.

Nurses on the third (graveyard) shift. They get all the crap.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

borscht - Nurses on ANY shift get a lot of crap.

Definitely not all the no-brainer PMs,presidents and kings.

Nowadays all professions just shoot themselves on the foot with their no brainer ways/mentality.

We need more high class moderated forums/dialogues like JT/others to enlighten them all on their no brainer ways via massive input feedbacks.

Mothers.

The good ones. No job is harder. No job is more important and no job has the potential upside and downside, based on performance.

Firemen. Risk their lives for £30,000 a year.

Taka313 - Mothers! What about fathers?! xD Mothers and fathers certainly have a hard job, but they don't get paid, and the question is which professions do you respect the most?

I really respect sportsmen because they make so much money and do so with such grace while getting away with assault on a daily basis. These guys are great role models for the younger generations. How else are we going to teach our boys to be men?

You know those j-chicks who stand next to movie posters...?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

smartacus, does your respect extend to the J-satsu?

Complex mortgage-backed securities and credit derivatives traders. Who else could get away with such a level of corporate and economic devastation and still walk away with multi-million dollar compensation packages and bank accounts bulging with cash after a few, brief years of mega-bonuses. Those guys are geniuses.

MichaelJP - Har! I'm going to start training from tomorrow to be a complex mortgage-backed securities and credit derivatives trader!

Fireman, Doctors/Nurses, Teachers and Police force. I'd be Nothing without these Pros!

Military people. They give up a lot and get very little in return.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I would agree with 1Keiron. Even though there are bad people in those careers, the world would be more caotic without these people.

CMEANDU26 - do you honestly value soldiers over doctors and nurses? I think you're in a bit of a minority there

0 ( +0 / -0 )

frontandcntre - When I say military I am talking about all military people from the guy who kills the enemy that he was told to kill to the doctor, nurse, or dentist that works in the military hospital. All MILITARY personnel give a lot and get very little in return.

I am not worried about being in a minority. Kinda like it that way. Just saying how I feel.

I agree with CMEANDU....
