I second the vote for Kurt Weill.
No songwriter has been covered by a greater variety of artists -- from opera singers to rock groups like The Doors -- than Weill. Some artists, like Lotte Lenya and Teresa Stratas, have dedicated their careers to perfecting the interpretations of his songs. Centuries from now, artists will still be doing so -- as they do today with Mozart and Bach.

The trio of Plant, Page & Jones (disappointment no one mentioned this - Led Zeppelin are only the greatest band of all time, but hey) Roger Waters (thank god someone mentioned his name!) Burt Bacharach, Carole King, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bono of course (early years mainly), Michael Jackson & Quincy Jones, Freddie Mercury & Brian May - too many to choose from and all groundbreaking in their own right.

I'd go with the Gershwin's. But then there's always Ian Anderson.

Lennon/McCartney, Rogers and Hammerstein, Duke Ellington, Dozier/Holland/Dozier, George and Ira Gershwin, Jagger/Richards.

No one mentioned Eric Clapton. I don't know that I'd say he was the greatest of the last 100 years - I'm not that old to know the best. And the best really is a genre thing.

Hard to pick just one. My favorites: Jimmy Webb, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Carole King, Elvis Costello.

John Lennon.
Thomas Anderson
AKB48.

Stevie Wonder on the strength of the classic 70s albums would be up there with Lennon and Dylan for me. 'Innervisions' is an incredible album.

Probably will end up with John Lennon, Roger Waters or Bob Dylan.
But young lings and pop culture hipsters may gonna vote for Lady Gaga or Jay-z or 50 Cents.

Captain Beefheart, Bruce Springsteen, Bono and Edge, Patti Smith,Frank Black, tick some of my boxes ....and on and on. The question should be, 'List your favourite songwriters'. Or is JT just checking if the 'thumbs down' button works?

He's been writing songs for over 60 years now in a variety of genres.100s of songs and many, many classics too.

Difficult to pick one. I'd go with John Lennon, followed by Paul McCartney, one of the Gershwins and maybe Cole Porter.

Britney Spears.
