Bagel and Bagel. They are soft and chewy and don't crumble apart.

Yes, bagel and bagel as well!

My house. Freshly baked daily, delicious, made using 100% natural locally grown ingredients, low in sugar, high in vitamins... but they're pricey and you'll have to fight my daughter if you want one, and she bites.

Honestly, muffins are super-easy to make and you can make a load of muffin mixture on Sunday, then put it in a ziplock bag and store it in the fridge and it'll keep just fine until Saturday. Every morning just pour a bit out into a muffin tray, slip it in the oven before your shower or while you get dressed, and by the time you're done you'll have beautiful fresh muffins ready to eat for breakfast.

There is no excuse for buying disgusting pre-packaged, preservative-laden, sugar-sweet muffins when you could make healthy, fresh, naturally sweet ones at home.

We're talking about large cupcakes?

Proper muffins are made with yeast (they're bread), need to be proved and shaped so that they're flat on both sides. I'd like to say the best are chez cleo and not for sale, but they're so time-consuming I rarely bother. when I do make the effort, I'm glad I did. The supermarket ones are as good as it gets here. Gotta go back to the Old Country to get proper ones.

MumbaiRocks!

Where in Shibuya? I go there quite a lot and would love to find good American-style muffins.

I was thinking the same thing Cleo. I love a toasted muffin with some smoked salmon and a poached egg on it with a bit of spinach on the side for a special breakfast. You can get muffins in Japan but they are so so.

Try the trick I suggested. Make your dough on Sunday (I do it Sunday because I normally have time then) and it'll keep all week in the fridge (not freezer!).

Yes, proper muffins toasted, with cream cheese, or a soft-boiled egg, or honey on top, . Lovely!

For the real deal though, you need crumpets. GOD I miss crumpets.

The City Bakery, underground between Osaka station and Grand Front.

Maria, I feel for you.

On a trip to the UK last year I mentioned to my brother (who we were staying with) that crumpets were unobtainable in Japan and that I missed them. We had crumpets for breakfast every day after that - heaven! Now I'm back to missing them again.

Frungy, it's the shaping and proving that take the time, not the dough-making. Even in the fridge, muffins made and left uncooked would be over-risen and well past their best in just a couple of days. Not to mention the hassle of keeping them pressed flat - takes up a lot of fridge space.

Nothing like a bit of crumpet and muffin in the morning!

Cleo, you can get crumpets in SejyoIshi.
