Because they can

World is becoming anti-social in this cyber age that people are shy to ask others to take a picture for them.

Agree with DaDude, and also because they are morons.

People have always taken photo's of themselves when visiting a tourist spot or whatever but previously first with film cameras and then the digital cameras they would ask a person nearby to take them but with the smart phone they can take them theirselves.

How many are actually taken is not even known?

So they can feel good about themselves(in their heads) and get reaffirmation, through getting clicks/likes on social media.

Narcissism.

Westerners used to take photos with no people in them if at all possible, maybe to show how they have been and seen paradise, and captured it artistically.

Perhaps the selfie craze embraces humanity by putting oneself and maybe collaterally others too, smack bang in the middle of a slightly 'unusual' place or situation.

I still think the best way to ruin a photograph is to put me in to it!

Narcissism works, my first thought was vanity...
