What's your theory on why some men grope women on trains? Why can't they control the urge?

I think that since this is a very vague question a very vague answer is required. Just like with anything some people choose to control their actions. For example, you buy from a store, not steal, even when low on money. You respect other people, even when it's easy not to. But those who see an opportunity to do wrong and choose to not control their actions, probably do so for a wide variety of reasons. Some people may have a mental disability, while others simply do wrong even though they know it to be bad.

Because sexism is the default in Japanese society.

It's the inability to sympathize or empathize with others, the common denominator found in every psychopath, from CEOs to rapists, to serial killers.

I think it is totally weird. like upskirt photos. Just frustrated, repressed people who can't control themselves.

If you're having urges to grope somebody, there's already something wrong, even if you don't act upon them.

Some guys are really broken.

Why assume that they can't control themselves?

I am quite sure that they can, but feel that they can get away with it by either escaping into the crowd, denying they were the one who groped the victim, saying it was an accidental touch, blaming the victim for dressing or acting inappropriately, or saying they were drunk and so not in control of their actions.

These are not mentally ill people here. These are regular people who are trying to take advantage of a vulnerable person in a confused or isolated situation.

This is exacerbated by the onus often being on the victim to prove they were in fact assaulted, and by other people assuming the victim is lying.

Maria.

Well said. Was I tempted before, got to say Yes did I act on the temptation No.

Many cops here and overseas think they are untouchable.

Why can't they control the urge?

Surely many/most of them could if they wanted to. They just don't think much of their victims and reckon they can get away with it. The choice of the question's wording is imo pretty poor.

Umm, what should I say...? First, this is beause of the terribly crowded cars that makes certain people think that they are not being witnessed by other passengers. Second, in my opinion, this is attributed to the notion that female must be passive, which is unique to Japanese. The rate of gropes committed by women are very low. And third, this is also attributed to the bad notion that woman have to be moderate and modest. So, not haveing decreasig rate of gropes on women expresss low position of women in Japanese society, which is I think this is ashame.

Why can't they control the urge?

They can. They just don't.

As someone who has been groped several times, I have some observations. Could be a combination of the following:

1) They're perverts. Plain and simple.

2) They're really drunk so their judgment may be clouded.

3) They're repressed. (I mean, even their porn videos are pixelated.)

4) They think they can get away with it (I guess a lot of women who are groped won't even bother complaining. I for one haven't because my initial reaction is usually to run away/get off the train car as soon as I can) -- they usually target vulnerable-looking girls/women in this sense.

5) They still have that mindset that if someone is wearing sexy clothes, then she's asking for it (happened to me with some South Asian-looking guys)

Because as little boys they were never taught any self-control? They were never disciplined? The belief that women are there to serve men so they can do whatever they like? Because they're creepy perverts? Who knows... it could be all, some or none of those reasons... I don't want to get into that thought pattern... I like being able to control myself and have respect for women.

Because Japanese society has accepted this (until very recently).

Like the NHK guy who forcibly kissed a woman the other day, these people need to lay off the porn. Complete break from reality these clowns.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Some factors which i think might contribute

The porn here always has the woman being an unwilling participant (to the point of looking like rape); but suddenly start to enjoy it after the initial objections.

Lack of self confidence or willingness to turn around and yell at the perpetrator or slap them, like you would have in other countries.

Sexless marriages / girlfriendless recluses.

General lack of physical intimacy in Japanese society

Seeing a TV show about it recently, most were being caught for the second or third time.

Its likely a mental heath issue, or serious personality defect that requires professional help and monitoring, however given the status of mental health here.. is probably why they are being caught for the second or third time.

While I agree there are issues about how women are portrayed and ideas about socialisation that need attention, to actually take action seems to be something else.

Because of bad education and low level of self control, typically combined with high level of alcohol. Btw, the main statement is sexist to hell and a bit disgusting, because women do too grope men in train, its just typically men dont report it. Fact is , men are generally attracted to women and vice versa , its part of us being animals with urges. The only way to stop is to teach self control.

Hormones.

Alex,

Generally these guys hang out, target specific women and have specific techniques, its likely little to do with alcohol.. bad education.. it seemed to be fairly "normal" employed and reasonably dressed people in the cases I have seen.. so that seems unlikely too.

Why do you think it is something related to Japan? Why gropers cannot control the urge? It is the same reason that some men in other countries rape women.

By the way, afanofjapan, do you think women would actually slap a rapist in the face in other countries? I think it is not recommended.

CH3CH0 'Why do you think it is something related to Japan?'

Well, gee, maybe because we are responding to an article on a website called JAPANTODAY.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why? Because "men" like Trump and O'Reilly say it's ok to grab some.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Because they perceive they can get away with it for what ever reason.

I remember a time where i accidentally slapped a Japanese female on the face quite literally on the subway. While I did exclaim the appologies before she could even turn towards me. But before I knew it, she had already turned back and resumed her conversation with her friend, not even any venting of frustration, anger, or even a dirty look.... Not even sure if she said ANYTHING.

IRCC the slap was strong enough to be audible no less.
