Why do you think FIFA continues to refuse to allow technology to help referees make decisions, given the number of controversial calls at the World Cup?

They may be part of International Gambling Racket. However, in future they will have to consider and use camera replays !

American football, which has lots of downtime, uses the instant replay and it doesn't slow the game down because it's a pretty slow game anyway. If soccer were to use instant replay, they'd slow the game down a lot. Maybe having more than one official on the field would be easier (?)

The referee lobby must be pretty powerful. They want to keep their jobs. Once instant replay is introduced the overall quality and high standards expected of referees will no longer be necessary. But FIFA needs to start blacklisting these horrible refs.

Perhaps some of the game locations don't have electricity and video recording?

What about allowing 2 coach replay reviews per game? This would limit the use, require the coach to request the review, but there needs to be a penalty if the review doesn't overturn a referee's on-field ruling.

In American College Football, the head coach can request a review of the last play or call before the next play begins, but if the the coach is wrong, then their team is charged for a time-out. I don't know how to translate this for soccer.

I think they should use a video ref only in the "box" area. To stop players faking a foul and therefore milking a penalty, and also make certain of the goal where there may have been a handball or other infringement.

Football is not a fast-flowing game in itself - unlike basketball for example. If we had to interrupt it even more, it would really, really make it worse.

Also, why do we need technology? Can we not put two additional referees by the goal lines?

Video refs are used in many other sports and with this being 'The World Cup' they should also be used in this sport too. They have proven their worth in Rugby and Rugby League time and time again. So what if they have to stop the game for 30 seconds or so to get a ruling. At least it would be right. There have been at least half a dozen bad calls in this year's world cup that would have been squashed by a video ref. That goal for England is just one example.

Because then you wouldn't have great little quips like:

Seriously though - I'm English, and our game was over the second Lampard's goal was disallowed. It happened once before against Germany, exactly the same way... and it's a real killer for morale. Very hard to pick yourself up from something like that. Referee mistakes like this have plagued the World Cup for decades, and I think the majority of people share the opinion that it's about time they should be overruled based on video footage.

FIFA should put it to the vote on their website and see what happens.

I like what Dana from UFC says, "dont leave it in the hands of the judges". Meaning go out and demolish the team or ;person in UFC. I would say tradition, like sumo (which i dont follow so i cant really comment but i think it is quite the traditional sport). And the first comment about gambling could be a good reason too. I wonder about Tennis and Volleyball. Do refs consult the cameras??

I also think that cheating and faking injuries (trying to fool the ref) is part of the game of football. If you can avoid being caught, then you have out "zuruiied" the refs/opponents.

The game was never in dispute Ironbeard. Based on previous performances, England were poor and deserved what they got!

As for the use of technology, video replays is not the way to go. Simple technology that would prevent the stopping of the game would kerb the most erroneous decisions made by referees. Hawk-eye, as used in tennis would be ideal as it's instantaneous.

As for players diving and pretending they have been uppercut by another player, this would be eradicated overnight if the football association's had the balls to overturn major decisions through the appeal process.

Seeing as the IFAB have the final say on all matters, for which all the home nations are represented with a vote each, I don't foresee any changes in the near future! Only England & Scotland have pushed heavily for the use of technology in football.

FIFA Prez Sepp Blatter just made a statement about revisiting goal-line tech again, but that's it. Whether it's tech or a goal-line judge (for those places that can't afford tech), it has to be given the chance. MLS already stated they're willing to be guinea pigs.

You really don't have to stop the game. Just have a dedicated ref who watches a video replay for goals. If it clearly is a goal then he can radio the official and tell him. Play stops in that case only, but it's supposed to stop when a goal is scored anyway so there's no "extra stopping." If the right call is made then nothing happens at all.

For flopping, just fine the players after the game. It won't eliminate flopping but it will probably reduce it to a tolerable level.

The biggest hurdle seems to be getting the game to change. They should try it out for a year and if it works then great, if it doesn't then at least you tried it and you've put the replay issue to rest. And don't trust anyone who brings up the NFL. It's a meaningless comparison that amounts to nothing more than a distraction.

FIFA are against video technology because it lessens their ability to bias refereeing decisions towards a particular team or to manipulate the outcome of certain games. This is very important in major tournaments to ensure the best and most popular teams reach the finals. This is required to maintain a high level of public interest and is therefore much better for commercial advertising and for football as a whole.

Instead of using video for assisting the referees , Why not use it for a show on who is the best faker in the game You could have a whole series on it and it would be international as most of the teams do it, In particular the South Americans and Europeans.

When are they going to start playing the game, I am happy my son's no longer play it as it teaches them poor sportsmanship.
