With disinformation rife and social media amplifying military claims and counterclaims, what do you think is the best way to determine exactly what is happening in Ukraine?

Follow the right people/topics on Twitter and the right communities/subreddits on Reddit. Find some balance. Speaking of balance, just an example: I regularly watch both CNN and FOX. Don’t care about left and right. Just wanna be well informed and listen to what people have to say ( doesn’t matter if I agree with them or not ).

In the end it’s all about you. ( Ask yourself: are you the kind of person that can easily believe in some bs or not )

In times like these, there's really no absolutely 100% way to obtain immaculate and unfiltered news from Ukraine. On the Russian side, their media and their online trolls are spreading pro-Russian content on the internet with the intent to soften Moscow's actions. On the other, media tend to amplify and demonize Russia more than they should, I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not unbiased news. If we really want the rawest news we can get, then we should look into small-time independent journalists in Ukraine that are covering the situation, better if we can get amateur footage from both sides of the conflict.

The western media has gone full anti -Russia propaganda....

Obviously there is a lot of wrong to point out but they don't need to show the bloodied face of a middle aged "Ukrainian" woman ..... That photo which was in almost every newspaper worldwide was actually from a gas explosion in Bulgaria in 2016.

The "Russian" troop carrier that ran over the car was in fact Ukrainian as was the rocket hitting the apartment building. Now, I know there are plenty of bad Russian actions going on, but if you don't have them on film, DON'T make up stuff or show stuff you know not to be true .

Ignore all social media related to this. Shouldn't be hard for smart people in the US. We've been ignoring social media since Trump decided to run for President.

Ignore media from the the invading country and other countries who would invade if they could get away with it (Belarus, Iran, some African countries) who don't have protected freedom of the press. I.e. ignore all countries that put out "guidelines" for how to put news out for the invasion and have a history of censorship of news organizations.

Then seek out a news organization which doesn't get caught all-the-time lying by fact-checking organizations.

I'd like to be very clear. I don't have any issue with the Russian people. It is the Russian Govt and leaders and the volunteer soldiers who I have a problem about. They've made completely bogus claims about Ukraine which are easily disproven.

I've seen a few ex-US military "experts" on TV. I think those guys are just propaganda for the US and pro-Ukraine media too. Ukraine didn't deserve to be invaded in 2022 or in 2014.

Anyone else notice that GD stock is hitting all-time highs?

With disinformation rife and social media amplifying military claims and counterclaims, what do you think is the best way to determine exactly what is happening in the Ukraine?

Just compare it to the mindless slaughter that was inflicted on the defenseless people of Iraq in 2003. Compared to that and to what Russia COULD do, the Russians, so far, are just tourists. But nothing compares to having witnessed the endless busted lies which have been propagated in the Western media over the last several decades, even over the smallest issues. The media doesn't 'report', it sells what its sponsors want YOU to believe, that is, the best 'news' money can buy...the 'other guy' is always the perp and we the hero regardless of whom the 'we' is.

I think it is an unfortunate side-effect of people used to instant information about everything.

That's simply not possible in a warzone, the only people able to really give credible accounts are people actively involved in the conflict, they aren't going to be impartial either way.

In the scramble to feed the demand for instant information, we've got all kinds of mixed information. Video game footage being passed off as real, photos from years ago, photos from the Gaza Strip even. Some may be malicious propaganda, others may be simply be well-meaning but misguided distribution.

The best you can do is be VERY skeptical of anything you see, especially if it seems almost unbelievable. Wait until stories get multiple levels of confirmation, be patient. Get in the habit of reading multiple news sources from both sides, because the truth is probably somewhere between them.

Evidence?

Outsiders simply can’t exactly determine what’s really going on. The only thing one can do is to estimate the truth in the interval which ends are provided from the two conflict sides. Or in other words, take the average of the two lies.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Outsiders simply can’t exactly determine what’s really going on.

The BBC has reporters on the ground, in Kyiv and elsewhere. It doesn't take much 'estimating', after coming out of the underground bunker you have shared overnight with local residents and seeing buildings burning or destroyed, to determine what is going on. No, those residential buildings did not spontaneously explode, that little boy's legs did not fall off his body for no apparent reason.

Meanwhile in Russia, foreign media is banned and the Russian media are not even allowed to mention the words 'war' and 'invasion'.

Add them up, take the average .... and yes, Putin is a crazed dictator hell-bent on mayhem and destruction.

JT - it isn't "The Ukraine". It's just "Ukraine".

4 ( +5 / -1 )

@cleo

The BBC has a horse in the race as much as any other outlet involved in the conflict. There's no reason to take anything they say at face value any more or less than any other outlets.

Meanwhile in Russia, foreign media is banned and the Russian media are not even allowed to mention the words 'war' and 'invasion'.

That is also part of the problem, because on the opposite side you have Russian media being banned across the EU right now. Countries like Czech and Latvia have banned any social media posts in support of Russia, threatening jail time for offenses.

Outlets like RT aren't remotely a bastion of amazing journalism, but banning them certainly undermines the free speech narrative. You can't censure a country for doing exactly the same thing you are doing.

I’m enjoying aljazeera’s coverage. They’ve got people on the ground all around Ukraine, & Moscow too

Long and ongoing thread of viral news clips verified/debunked. I've seen several of the debunked ones on Japanese TV this week......

Apparently, some people think they’re “smart” because they don’t believe in every piece of information, even when they see it with their own eyes. They attack western msm and all of a sudden we’re the bad guys. Go figure.

It's Twitter, Alfie. Debunking stuff posted on Telegram, Tik Tok, Facebook and other sns.

A total waste of time. Who gets their news from sns?

I'll stick with the BBC, thanks. When they have a report that is unconfirmed, they state clearly 'this is being reported but it hasn't been confirmed'.

Still waiting for evidence of Mr Kipling's claims of a Ukrainian military vehicle deliberately crushing a car?

A good starting point is to assume that the mainstream media is fake news. Then find good alternative sources.

Regarding the recent Russia-Ukraine conflict, one should listen to speeches by Putin and Lavrov to get the Russian side rather than just relying on the MSM.

Just ignore it, even the sides fighting won't know exactly what's happening either.

Yes!

It is the BBC. Shayan Sardarizadeh is a BBC journalist { ; - )

Quite right. I listened directly to Putin's rants and Lavrov's ridiculous excuses, and learned that Vlad is Mad and Lavrov is a lying lackey. Either that, or the translator was taking ginormous liberties.

Diplomats at the UN walked out when Lavrov started spewing his rubbish. Either because they were disgusted at his lies or didn't want to commit the faux pas of vomiting as he spoke.

It's Twitter, debunking sns. I know it's rubbish without ploughing through Tweets. :-)

Better, quicker, and more efficient to just read what she writes on the BBC page.

lol You never can tell these days, can you?

Sorry Shayan, not got much time for Twitter, scrolled through without taking much notice of your photo.

Have you been drinking Cleo?

Not yet, but I will.....

Cheers!

It is difficult to find out what exactly is what in the "fog of war." It is important of to read and listen critically and hope the truth will make itself present.

Cleo....

If you know what to look for it has Ukrainian markings.

Do you seriously contend this whole war is some reality TV social media game show?

It's is all make believe?.

All the rubble and daily updated on atrocities are just fun and games?

The, close to two millions refugee are going to break out and say had you going there?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Have you seen the video where they are filming all the body bags of dead Russian soldiers? They lined them up in a row then, one of the bags start moving and a guy rears his head to breath. A guy quickly rushes in to tell him not yet and to get back in the bag.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Stick to facts

be mindful of the media landscape, the realities of it. Know that bias is a reality, and try to account for it.

Redraw the conclusions, you don't have to agree with all points being presented.

Lastly, take your time, be calm, be skeptical of the first thing that comes your way. If you always need to be the fastest and most critical then you won't likely be right.

I always read the comments on JT to get all the facts, all the time.

Ukraine live TV supposedly filming dead persons killed from the invasion by Russia. During the filming, one of the dead woke up to make adjustments.

I muted those friends in social media who keep posting about Ukraine and the war. I decided to just ignore whatever's happening over there coz there's absolutely nothing I can do.

Jump on a plane to Warsaw of Bucharest and hike into Ukraine......

1 ( +1 / -0 )

In the fog of war and inevitable propaganda the details will be inaccurate or distorted, but none of that changes the reality of Russian missiles, cluster bombs and artillery blowing Ukrainian cities apart or the fact that Russia has invaded the Ukraine with massive forces killing and destroying innocent lives in a peaceful democratic neighbour who was no threat to them.

Anyone who wilfully ignores this is either so utterly blinkered as to be disconnected with reality or a willing supporter of murder and war crimes.

@Raw Beer: So.. The reporters on the ground on BBC, Sky, AL-J are all making this up? Pray, which alternative news sources should I be looking at? The people VISIBLY arriving in other countries is some kind of media manipulation?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Go to the comments section of JT to get your facts. Always.
