Would you like to see Haneda airport be the main hub for the Kanto area instead of Narita?

Haneda is much more convenient, especially if you are transferring from a domestic flight to an international flight. The Haneda to Narita transit is a pain in the neck. This would allow airlines to offer more international flights from local airports. I usually use Kansai Airport, because I'm in Hiroshima, but if Haneda had more international flights, it would probably be more convenient for me. As was written in a recent article here "Tokyo ranked fourth in terms of city functions among 35 major cities selected worldwide, with its main negatives being inconvenient access to Narita International Airport...", that pretty much says it all.

narita is fine as it is! Whats done is done unless Jpn wins a massive lottery. In any case HND cud only possible be a hub for Jpn it wont ever be a hub for say the far east, Jpn missed that boat by about 2-3decdades.

Don't really care either way. If Tokyo had a decent orbital road system, Narita would be a much better proposition, but with either option you have to drive through Tokyo on a toll road at a crawl, which is an affront to my ketchi sensibilities.

If we're talking strictly about a hub airport where people are transerring flights, eg domestic to international and vice versa, then it really doesn't matter where the airport is located. It's all a matter of flight scheduling.

Definitely...I don't get many flights to Narita (and they are always full). It is a drag landing in Haneda and carrying surfboards in the sweltering heat to Tokyo Station, getting lost there on the way, and then boarding a train to Narita. I gave up long ago and fly via Korea.

Haneda as the main hub for Kanto area? that would be nice...saves all the hassle of travelling to/from Narita..

How would using Haneda save all the hassle of driving to Narita? If Haneda was used as the main hub for air traffic the road traffic would be even more than a joke. I'd much rather prefer to drive for an hour to Narita airport than sit in a traffic jam for two hours trying to get to Haneda. The trains to Narita are convenient and economic. If you have ever traveled domestically using Haneda on a national holiday you would know how packed that silly monorail is. The thought of adding international travelers is sickening. There is also the noise factor to consider. Most people supporting Haneda do not live close to the airport and would not be affected by the extra noise from air traffic.

What a dumb question. Narita was built after a war with the native farmers over the land. That is a historical fact (check it out, its just 40 years old or less). Now that they've destroyed those farmers lives and lands do you think they're going to go back toallowing Haneda to be the main hub? Think again.

I always use Keikyu. It's never that bad. But getting to Kamata with all that luggage can be hell in the morning.

I agree with everything you say. After all that money spent on Narita. What I would like to see is more international flights from Haneda without ruining Narita because the latter is actually more convenient for those living in East Tokyo, Chiba and Ibaraki. BUT, they should improve the transport from the airports to the city centre AND between the two airports AND make it more affordable. I've said it before, but N'EX is a total rip-off, and the bus and train companies are all involved with each other in keeping fares up. They should make the new Skyliner next year cheap, but making sure that only passengers travelling to Narita Airport are allowed to board.

Definately! Haneda should become the main airport and Narita reverted back to rice fields. Its too far from Tokyo and too inconvenient. A waste of space and money - a legacy from the dinosaurs of the LDP.

Is it even feasible to reclaim more land from Haneda?

Screw the Tokyo Bay maritime traffic, Haneda can have an apron as big as Heartsfield-Jackson if we want MUHAHAHAHAHA

For convenience - yes, for the additional noise for us Ohta-ku residents - no.

Fix the Trains to Narita!

Having Hanada serve more International flights would be nice. But with all the investment in Narita, I think the best thing is to have frequent high-speed and low cost rail service from various places in the Tokyo region to Narita. Once you are at Narita, it's rather nice (except for Immigration which sucks). It's well run with helpful and friendly staff.

The NEX is expensive, infrequent, and only goes to limited places. There is nothing more frustrating as when it slows to a near stop at various points during its route. The Skyliner is cheaper but more limited in its service area. If you live on the West side of Tokyo or Saitama, you are screwed.

Yes!

The thing is, if you try to keep Narita the "hub" for Intl. flights going through Japan, this still screws all the people who get off in Japan, they are stuck way out in Chiba. If Haneda becomes the hub, then the internationl flights going through Japan can drop off the Japan travelers closer to Tokyo and the thru-load passengers continuing on to other Asian countries will not affect anything at the airport or local roads. Actually, the vast majority of traffic going to/from Narita already passes right by Haneda, so for a part of that traffic to be routed to Haneda is really no big deal and it would relieve some traffic in Chiba area.

The only reason it would make sense to defend the status quo would be if there was a clear plan to build a high-capacity, dedicated high speed rail line between Narita and Haneda, ideally a maglev train that could do the journey in about 15-20 minutes terminal to terminal.

It is unbelieveably dumb for these people to be campaigning for a Tokyo - Osaka maglev when there is a much better application for such technology right here at a much lower price (though still $$$ Billions, of course).

If no such connection improved is planned, development of Haneda into a hub makes perfect sense - or, of course, the reverse approach, to kill Haneda and develop Narita for domestic flights.

The current situation is completely illogical without one of the developments above.

NO, make Nagoya the hub!

But seriously, I'd like to see a summary of all the pros and cons of making Haneda the hub. My initial reaction would be 'no', because I don't know all the pros and cons!
