Full marriage equality for LGBT people is inevitable and coming in the next few years.
Get used to it.

A step in the right direction but still baby steps. As conservative elders continue to die off, society in general will be more understanding and less judgemental.

Doesn't matter. Father's don't have rights in Japan anyways.
Jimizo
Yes.
Opposition or inaction will eventually be seen as a potential vote loser.
Just a matter of time.

Tokyo starts recognizing same-sex relationships
Nothing wrong with recognizing relationships. Business relationships are also legally recognized (and sometimes a certificate is issued).
"I feel that Japanese people's level of understanding towards same-sex marriage is now high enough," Miki said.
There is no same-sex marriage in Japan, so there is no understanding of such.
And a same-sex marriage is impossible by the definition of marriage.

Half measures such as this might actually delay that day

It's about time.

Welcome to the 21st century, Japan.

Your definition, but not mine
So many things in this world have been opposed by people reluctant to change---votes for women, ending slavery, even flying was considered unnatural by some

Parthenogenesis, perhaps.

Some good news for once. A step in the right direction. Hopefully in the coming years, marriage equality will happen in Japan.

Indeed a loving couple.
Where is the Father?
I would be lost without my Dad.
Sorry call me all the names in the world, but a family is a Mum and Dad.
I am fully aware that may families have single parents for a wealth of reasons.
Nature intended a Mum and a Dad.
The toddler never gets to chose.
Does it

Question for those who have same sex marriages in their countries. How are close blood relatives handled?
Just want to confirm if same sex close relatives are allowed to marry, as they should be, but opposite sex close relatives aren't , as is the norm

Civil marriage between same sex couples is a human right.
I would be a fraud, if I did not say, I find children, in my own personal experience miss out on the wonders of a Dad. For all his faults my Dad is half of who I am.
Dylan
The important point with children is they are loved and nurtured. Too many don't have that.

Well done Tokyo! It’s only 40 years behind the rest of the modern world.
Bob Fosse
A step forward. Same sex marriage will be recognised in Japan someday.

Why? Does he owe you money or something?

"LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED" - Why do so many still not get it? Life is too short to waste it getting twisted out of shape and meddling in affairs of the heart that are not our business.

Long overdue
Fighto!
Good for them. If the kids are brought up in a loving family, I couldn't care less about the gender(s) of the parents.
One issue though - will there be any consequences if a business or real-estate agency, for instance, refuses to legally recognise these certificates, and continues to discriminate?

With the start of anything, a momentum is created towards negativity or, positivity and, in this case the momentum created by Tokio, is a positive
huge step foprward.

It's about time!! OMG wait till the UC finds out, LOL

As long as they are happy good luck to them!
Don’t force your beliefs on the kiddies though let them make up their own minds!

I wonder if the couple will teach the boy to be a man. Things like changing a tire, how to shave, how to fix a leaking faucet, how to shake hands, how to ask a woman on a date, how to tie a tie, how to make a toast, how to hammer a nail, how to fix things around the house, how to use a barbecue, how to parallel park, how to fish, how to play baseball, etc.?

many children have no father, or mother. Sometimes they lose both or given up for adoption.

I'm guessing you are being sarcastic because where I'm from women are better than men at all of those things.

No, and you can't have a straight pride day, either.

Exactly NONE of those things has anything to do with being a man.
