........because bars and restaurants are the only businesses in town?
geronimo2006
Before handing out subsidies to smaller restaurants and bars senior officials will have to have a special inspection. Costs part of the subsidy of course.

These money are mostly going to the super rich large business owners, with some crumbs for the small business owners. Workers and common people will never see a single yen of aid.

Unless you’re being sarcastic, nowhere in the article does it say that one red cent of that money will go to the women and students whose income has been slashed by these lockdowns. It is only fair that Suga give back what he hath taketh away,

So does everyone. If the government is telling everyone to stay home and not go out (which is probably correct from a public health viewpoint) then they are also impacting any kind of business that relies on having customers around. But only the restaurants and bars are getting financial support to offset this.
A lot of the little mom-and-pop restaurants seem more like hobbies anyway, and I guess that they aren't paying any rent as they have owned the building for years.
A lot of the bigger restaurant chains are no different from any of the other industries, who also have lots of workers who are just trying to sustain their own families.

Well, a lot of these business are now getting totally crushed by the current sittuation. I'm all for my taxes money to be used for supporting these people. The real Japanese charm lies in these small shops offering nice athmosphere and really good food. I'd be really sad seeing them closing the shutters forewer and we have to rememer they also have to sustain their own families and dreams as well.

Great! Most of the people who work at restaurant are women and students. They need the help. Good job Suga! Taking care of the Japanese people.

If you have 2 or 6 customers a night, not a viable Buisness plan more a hobby. Don't think the government should support a hobby. Nurses get the same wage as the lowest paid workers, that should be addressed I pay a crap load of cash for insurance. But the staff who we all need in an emergency are lucky after tax to clear ¥1,000 an hour. That's not right.

"What’s the obsession with restaurants and bars?"
The covid virus is easily transmitted in settings such as restaurants and bars. This is why governments around the world have order restaurants and bars closed or to reduce their hours. Here is more information:

The money is yen, which comes from the government of Japan and the Bank of Japan, who hold a monopoly on yen issuance. Those authorities are able to spend the money into existence quite freely, until inflation rises to a dangerous level, and that won't be happening for a very long time!

good point. What’s to stop these businesses (especially the bigger ones) from pocketing the cash & still laying off staff ?

The fact is there are far too many bars and restaurants in Japan and 30 % or more will have to close anyhow
over the past year, there were 30 million tourist less and Japan depopulates at a record rate. Of course less immigration now as well. And more people eat at home for different reasons.
I want to ad that the hygiene conditions in many restaurants in Japan, particularly the kitchens, are unacceptable.
So No matter what, thousands of bars and restaurants will close. I do agree with support for restaurant and bars if “ ordered “ to close but the virus’s is not the only reason for closures, it is the trigger.

Where does all this money come from? And to think that Foreign Minister Motegi has been in South America and Africa the last 10 days pledging billions of dollars in loans and grants just so Japan can try to counter China's influence in those regions. The government's money printing press must be working around the clock.

Bars are boring
I love Bars!
Especially my favourite Girls Bar.
But since the beginning of the Pandemic, I didnt go there.
And the Mama closed it temporary until the End of this 2nd SOE.

The subsidies keep going up but not one address about firms pocketing subsidies and still firing staff, drastically shortening their hourly wages and assigning unpaid leave.
But that was never a concern when it comes to these subsidies benefiting businesses was it?
Cricky
Tax goes up to pay for social security, that didn't happen. And now there are "reserve" funds for resturants, bars? Pretty obvious that 70yo old men like bars and resturants. Not families or people in general.
