until somebody family member is infected and then spreads it to the rural areas they escape to, as far as I know rural people still have to shop for food. panic and exodus is what makes pandemics.....pandemics.

The incubation period for this virus is around 7-14 days. You have no way of knowing, if you already have it, or not. So what happens, when you're in the middle of nowhere, in isolation, and then you or your family member becomes sick?

You don't seem to care so much, that you may spread the virus in to the rural area you're going to (remember, you can spread it even if you're asymptomatic) , but how about the scenario, that this rural area may not have enough medical equipment, beds, ICU's, doctors and nurses to care for you or your family either?

Not 24 hours ago a story on this news site was informing us that the Japanese have a tradition for respecting authority and obey peer group pressure.

And I know there are many wealthy Kansai identities with real estate in Karuizawa too.

Its not only selfish, but also self defeating. If the outbreak reaches the rural area they flee to, the lack of medical infrastructure will screw them over worse than Tokyo's overburdened one will.

'Escape From Tokyo' has been going on for a few weeks. The Local 'besso mura' (Holiday home village) has been really busy recently. Lots of flash Tokyo cars around. They are hopeless drivers, but the locals are happy for any visitors these days.

as i said in an earlier article, those who are capable of leaving tokyo should leave while they still can. this is assuming that you're not a carrier of the virus to which you'd better bug in instead in order to keep others safe. maybe this is just the crazy prepper in me saying this but when the masses and the government say something, that situation is already dire and you're already late. pardon me for being an "i told you so" guy but i told you so and i will i tell you things might not look well for tokyo unless the j-gov't do its job properly.

Scuttle off to their holiday homes (nice for the wealthy elite who can afford it) spreading the disease to under resourced areas so as to overburden the healthcare system and sacrificing the lives of others to their over inflated egos.

And THAT is the reason why you should't make pre-announcements of "possible" lockdowns, especially when your supposed goal is to prevent spread.

go figure the thinking of these people. Close the roads heading out of Tokyo and limit them only to emergency vehicles and supply distribution vehicles. No trains heading outside the prefectures to any other part of Japan unless 14 day quarantine is met and can provide proof of not being a carrier of CCPCOVID19

I don't understand what they are running from. If you or a household member have a high risk of dying from the virus, ok. But anybody else, why? Even with the state of emergency on Tokyo, you can still go out and buy anything you need for your life. Or buy it online. You can still go for a walk, jogging, cycling, as long as you keep your distance. You don't need to sit on your couch 24/7. The rules are far more strict in my home country and still my family and friends are allowed to do all of the things mentioned above, alone or with members of the same household only, of course. I am not afraid of staying in Tokyo.

We should not make the assumption that there is only one virus, covid19.

Funny how just a week or so ago, when the Olympics were still full on, Abe was happily skipping around this issue.

Except a two-week incubation period means you could be infected and not know it yet.

No! That’s the whole point! The virus is spreading because people who don’t know they have it are spreading it.

It’s a crap situation, but for this to work everyone has to STAY PUT!

I never lived in Kanto or have I every wanted to go east of Nagano and times like these very happy that I dont.

So glad I moved my April plans of leaving Japan forward to December last year. I couldn’t bear being locked down in Tokyo. Good luck to all my mates. I hope the frustration doesn’t get too much.

It's not like other prefectures don't have it already.

This is exactly why a hard lockdown is necessary. With restrictions on travelling.

Well, one reason to leave would be to lesson your chances of getting it, no? There are like 37,000,000 in the megatropolis.

You could choose to stay there with the hordes if you like, but just catching the train is terrifying in itself. Then there is living in a tiny, tiny, room on the 15th floor of a tower block, and the impossibility of properly practicing any meaningful social distancing. And then you have the coming social isolation for many who are originally not even from Tokyo, and you can see why many want to go back to their home towns.

Now they are begging people not to leave because they will "take " Corona with them? Well, I think I would rather leave than stay there as the situation is expected to deteriorate. And it seems many agree.

If you can, get out.

Those fleeing will contain infectious individuals. They will spread it in trains and expressway service centres and gas stations. People who don't have it when they flee may themselves become infected during the journey.

People fleeing pandemics has historically been an important part of how the diseases have spread.

To be fair, the US Embassy was telling Americans to hurry up and get out of Dodge. So leave Tokyo and go back to the US, or leave Tokyo and go back to your hometown is not really any different.

That's insane. They do understand that if they leave Tokyo for a month, they'll still have to pay for rent in Tokyo AND wherever they end up, right? If they're not working, from where is the additional income supposed to come?

That's all true. I hope others respect your right and freedom to do these things. There'll be some wannabe police out there, like that guy who pulled the emergency brake on the train because someone else coughed.

There may be an increase in license plates in places like Karuizawa but it isn’t like there is a mass panic of people jamming train stations and highways out of the metropolis. The reaction to the news of a small number of escapes is overwrought.

Jobs and schools are a main reason for many people to be in Tokyo. With businesses and schools closed, how many will escape to be with rural grandparents?

One wonders if there won’t be similar xenophobia to Tokyo license plates in Japan as there has been to New York plates in the U.S.

Out of interest if I could bug out from Kobe to a safer location a few hours drive away and self isolate would you guys also consider that wrong? Thumbs up it’s the right thing to do thumbs down if it’s the wrong thing to do.
