Western parts of Japan are still recovering from the most powerful typhoon to strike the country in a quarter of a century, that claimed 11 lives and shut down the main regional airport in early September.

Please stop kicking Okinawa out of Japan! As much as you hate to accept us down here, we still are a part of Japan!

Stay safe everyone!

After the last one, maybe its time to reconsider whether folks should be allowed to put big advertising hoardings and other paraphernalia on top of tall buildings. It's possible because they don't count under height restrictions.

My town has had 200% of average rain in the past thirty days, so I'm already a bit sick of rain. I can see vegetables going up in price in the coming months too.

Good point...typhoon, no work. Bad point...no work, no pay.

please stock up on essentials.

Here we go again...

Kansai Airport management please take note to put any ships on the leeward side of the airport this time!

or maybe just don't be at KIX at all this time

I swear China has some invisible typhoon shield that bounces the typhoons 99% of time towards Japan. All kidding aside, let's hope it doesn't do much damage. Close your curtains for flying glass if something hits your window, don't be stubborn and stay inside and to the Japanese people.....please for the love of god, don't use an umbrella in this weather.

please for the love of god, don't use an umbrella in this weather.

And don't climb up on the roof to check for leaks and/or loose slates.

Or amble over to the pier to check the waves.

And if you do try to use an umbrella and it dies, don't chuck it in the street - dispose of it responsibly, so that it doesn't get blown through someone's window.

Stay safe.

This one is expected to hit Kansai at a lower scale than the last one thankfully. Still am shook up from the last one though.

And the weather god takes aim at Japan again. What did we do to piss you off this year?

As a resident of Kochi, nature, could well be about to deliver a severe sit up and pay attention moment.

Shutter up your properties. Remove, secure, and store any gardening equipment, potted plants etc etc. Get any last minute shopping in tomorrow, expect heavy rain.

Kumamoto's really dodged the bullet this year. Those in Okinawa and Shikoku, take care!

The typhoon is now moving northwest slowly but is expected to turn eastward, coming very close to the islands of Okinawa and Amami on Saturday, the agency said in a statement.

Ever wonder how it is Tokyo, Osaka and other heavily constructed areas never see the eye of the typhoon? I believe the large amount of concrete and high rises has a lot to do with it. The storms are squeezed into areas ill suited for heavy storms. All hell breaks loose in those areas. Has Shanghai or any other large Chinese city been hit by a typhoon recently?

@talarae,

No, I'll be blunt but you're wrong. Major cities in Asia do regularly get hit. Osaka on September 4, killing about 10 people and damaging untold residences and shutting down Osaka's largest airport for the first time in its 24 year history. Then shortly after that, Hong Kong, Macau and other mainland cities got smacked hit by a level 10 typhoon, the maximum storm rating. The media in China obviously covered it--see SCMP for example.

ATTENTION ALL OLD MEN!

Do not go up on your roof during the typhoon, when their are strong winds or when the roof is still wet.

This action is VERY dangerous!

You have a high probability of joining the ever growing list of old men who fell off their roof during a storm.

Announcement over.

The eye of the storm is one of the calmest places in the storm... just saying.

This typhoon look very violent and huge size. The route this time seems some unfamiliar areas of Japan Sea... Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. All Japan to be ready!

Want to make a bet with me on this one?

Western parts of Japan are still recovering from the most powerful typhoon to strike the country in a quarter of a century,

I'll give you one name to start with, but there are others too, plenty, that have hit Okinawa over the past 25 years that make the one they refer to here as a puppy dog in comparison.

It WAS the strongest to hit MAINLAND Japan, but definitely NOT all Japan! Hence my comment, the writers here all too often write like TOKYO or mainland is the center of the universe, but there is a hell of a lot more to Japan than "there"

Oh I promised you a name.. Jelewat

The bread had been wiped clean from my local supermarket when I stopped by on the way home from work this evening.

The favorite line in nearly every AFP article is related to the island is "Okinawa was once the independent kingdom of Ryukyu and traded with both Japan and China." Should we expect an improvement now?

Take care everyone, I hope you’ll all be safe and there’ll be minimal damage to your homes. My son is currently in Kadoma-shi, Osaka so I’m going to be watching as many reports as I can over the weekend and praying that no one will be hurt. Good luck everyone x lots of love to you all in Japan x

It's pretty windy out there right now, the "power lines are singing" but so far not so bad. Been through a hell of a lot worse. Power cut off a couple of times this morning, but only for a minute or less. Lots of leaves blowing around and rainy, nice day to read a book with the head phones on.

One thing I rarely hear people talk about with typhoons, they are noisy.......

@Yubaru,

I'm interested to see how the typhoon impacts the election.

I'm interested to see how the typhoon impacts the election.

Looks like we should have much better weather tomorrow, considering the typhoon that is. Things look like things will calm down enough for people to get to the polls, but, and if local news is to be believed, the percentage of people actually going to vote could be the lowest in years, not due to apathy, but due to problems of the aftermath of the typhoon.

We, my wife and children, voted already, so now we are just waiting to see the results!

Oh and BTW, you are not the only one "interested"....we are too!
