I don't know; has it?

In a country where people can eat fish while they are still alive, I doubt people are concerned about the suffering involved at aquariums. Just the cost. Cruelty costs less than kindness. :/

Unfortunate loss for the aquarium. If possible, the unhealthy fish should have been isolated from the healthy ones and treated accordingly.
I'm surprised nobody here is blaming Trump; Trump's presence considered a toxic element in Japan.

Are fish considered cousins to humans? Apes and chimps sure - but I don’t think fish are as near to homosapians in evolutionary terms. And what does it mean to “take care” of other animals? I doubt this was done intentionally. If it is found to be intentional I would suspect someone is in a whole lot of trouble.

I enjoyed the aquarium, has been one of the highlights when I've visited Japan. I didn't know they've had issues before though.

Sad. Seems to me this could have been avoided. But I don't know much about aquariums.

That’s the problem with fish in a tank. When you got any problem, sometimes it can become a really big one. I lost my beautiful Discus tank last year :(

Why are they allowed to continue operating when they show zero competence in animal welfare.

Very fishy.

Hasn't this aquarium had all sorts of rare fish die under their 'care'?

Read the article:

"after the aquarium stopped a bubble-producing cleaning device ". Does this mean that the machine broke? was it stopped for maintenance ? but latter the article says "It continued to supply oxygen to the tank through another device" so if they have a back up machine why is not identical to the first machine? Iam also surprised that no one monitored the water parameters when they know that x,y,or z has partial stopped/failed. any one like me who keeps fish would be well aware of water parameters and we would monitor them, with all of these fish surly some one should have done this.

They wouldn't be fit to become food because of the chemicals added to the water to treat some unhealthy fish. Medication for tank fish nearly always has a warning stating clearly that the chemical is to be used only for ornamental fish, not food fish.
Ironic that the oxygen was stopped in order to treat some unhealthy fish. Not a good idea to leave the oxygen off overnight; there should have been someone monitoring things regularly.
Poor fish.

And this is why I sometimes despair. A pointless massacre, unless all of the dead fish at least go to become food. Somewhere it says that mankind must take care of our cousins, the other animals.

What a waste of life due to shear incompetence. Sad humans.....

Horrible. And to think; all these creatures were here for our entertainment.
