A 1-year old boy drowned in a bathtub at his family's home in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, on Wednesday night, police said Thursday.

According to police, the incident happened around 8:25 p.m. when the boy and his five cousins, aged 5 to 14, were playing together in the bathroom. The cousins left the bathroom for a moment and when they returned, the child was floating unconscious in the tub.

One of the cousins called emergency services immediately and the boy was taken to the hospital, but pronounced dead soon after.

According to police, the boy’s 19-year-old mother was not home at the time.

It seems to me the high schoolers get way too much sex education as it is with the amount of adult-oriented doujinshi out there. Perhaps a change to the laws should be made that requires all hentai doujinshi to make the female protagonist get pregnant by the end of the story? From what I've seen they almost always leave that consequence out of the stories. They go at it like rabbits with no apparent consequences. If the odds of a pregnancy happening were more realistically portrayed, adding that change to the laws just MIGHT encourage the teens to be a little more careful during their intimate relations. It might not, but at least they will have more evidence that bopping like rabbits usually results in lots of little rabbits.

Poor little mite. This can happen so easily. All 3 of mine have fallen into the bath as 1 year olds. The only difference with my cases is that I was standing no more than a few feet from them at the time and hauled them out in seconds. There was just no-one to help this little one.

I agree with tmarie that kids as young as 14 babysit in the west - BUT they are generally not put in charge of 5 kids at one time.

Wow, some really judgmental people on here. Is a mother supposed to be chained to her child? People are the age of 14 are left to babysit in our home countries all the time.

Tragedy for sure but don't blame the mother for this. And her being 19 doesn't factor into this at all.

What a tragedy. All the cousins left the room at once, except the one year old boy? And then they all came back. I wonder if something didn't happen while some cousins were in the room, let's all hold our breath and see how long we can stay under water... and baby can play, too...?

Hmmmm....19 year old mom?? Not even home at the time these kids were in the bath tub? I hope she is ARRESTED! Who in the hell leaves a 1 year old with out any ADULT SUPERVISION by themselves? The ideas, sadistic nature of kids etc...is BS, most likely they got HOT, you know, if you stay in a HOT bath for too long, your body gets hot, and these little kids forgot to take the baby out too and now we have a dead 1 year old baby boy. RIP

What can you expect from such an immature mother knowing that kids have a tendency to make weird fun of younger kids.

The mother can (SHOULD) be charged with neglect. Some kids have sadistic tendencies so its also possible that they forcibly held the baby underwater. So we have just the kids word of what happened. If they think they did something wrong then they will lie to hide it. The mother needs supervision more then the kids its seems.

They are all immature

How kind of you to make such generalisations.

Alladin, what's your alternative? Abstinence? Sometimes accidents happen and they can happen to anyone. The mother cold have been out working to support her family. The 14 year old was probably the babysitter who probably had another situation to deal with in the house and made a bad choice.

Why would the bath be filled with water at this time of year?

6 kids playing in the bath unit? How did they all fit?

19 year old mother! She is just a kid still yet. And why wasn`t she home? That is why I totally disagree with 19 year olds having kids, especially the Japanese 19 year olds. They are all immature and ready to have or take care of any kids. Anyone here can disagree with me, but this is not the only time that this has happened here in Japan. It has happened many many times.

Sounds suspicious to me... did they expect him to swim or something?

5-14+ a1yo 6 children left alone, 19 yo old Mum what a disaster, little bit of sex education at schools might help. How many children have to die before there is education on basic life skills.

I thought it was another child abuse story.

Yeah, poor kid. I feel sorry for the KID that was left in charge of five kids. He/She will possibly never get over it. - The kid was 1y/o and the mother is 19y/o. A high school pregnancy. Hmmmm.
