This was just a matter of time, none of those services even promote the safety of their services as a selling point, and they collect a huge lot of information. 1.7 people are now at very high risk of having their information used for criminal purposes.

Japan’s IT has a lot to be desired.

What a nonsense article.

Japan has 126 million people and the site claims 50 million matches made through it.

Of those 126 million people, probably 125 million have never heard of that site nor know anyone who has.

Morons, no security in Japan, loads of people going to have loans and credit cards opened under their names now...

@yoyogi.

5 million users, 50million matches. It's saying, on average each user has matched with 10 other users.

I've never liked, nor understood why, almost all JP websites require your DOB when registering. It makes no sense, and is a major security flaw.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

@garypen, always give a false DOB on any webpage other than government and banking.

I'd like to know where this was leaked to so I can check it for myself to see if this article is true or not.

How many like pina coladas? Or walking in the rain?

Mat

@garypen, always give a false DOB on any webpage other than government and banking.

Of course. But, the issue is that so many websites here require it in the first place. And, you just know that many, if not most, Japanese are entering their actual DOB's.

Due to these clueless website operators that keep losing private information of its users...we’ll never be able to get rid of our hanko.

The customer information also included addresses and dates of birth from identification, including passports, drivers' licenses and health insurance cards, provided to the company.

Addresses = physical home addresses?? Leaked = secretly sold

Why on earth would a dating website need your passport, driver’s license, or health insurance card??? Japanese companies ask for way too much info. I still can’t get over the fact that they wanted info on my job, monthly salary, and PARENTS when I signed up for Gold’s Gym in Tokyo about a decade ago. I was in my 20s,

They need a proof of age. Members can choose to supply that info via one of those items.

Which is why you should not be hitting on people on this site

They need a proof of age. Members can choose to supply that info via one of those items.

They might need it for that, but they have no need to retain that data once the verification has been done.

Companies should retain the minimum amount of information that they need because leaks/hacks will happen. Therefore everyone should work on the basis that a website will be hacked.

Everyone should check their own email address on 'haveibeenpwned.com' to see the extent to which site information gets leaked.

""Net Marketing said it has not confirmed any use of the potentially leaked data by a third party.""

Sure, and your customers do believe you, LOL

Sounds about right. The Japanese IT industry is showing a lot of faults so far in 2021.

Take out the word "Japanese", and you become more accurate.

It's silly to think that EVERY country out there has IT problems.

Oops. Meant to say "It's silly if you don't think that EVERY country out there has IT problems".

Leaked or sold? I'm thinking they are one in the same.

You should never upload your passport, health insurance, driving license, DOB or My Number card info to a private online service.

If they are asking for it, walk away and use a different service.

If it was reliably encrypted, you don't have to worry about it being used, but should avoid a service with such lousy security. If the user data was not encrypted on their servers, they should go to prison.

Data should not be retained beyond use for authentication.

Switch to distributed systems so that folk can retain their personal data on their own systems in an encrypted wallet. The absence of a single large stash of data erases the opportunity to steal it wholesale.

When registering for a dating app in Japan , the law require them to submit a copy of passports , drivers' licenses or health insurance cards to dating app operator company.

There are almost no penalties for COMPANY to leak personal information in Japan, legally and socially.

Stupid ? I know.

@Yuka333 - you're wrong, Japanese Personal Privacy Information laws exist...

Will people whose information was leaked be informed? If this company hasn’t informed yet, they should as soon as possible cause those people is at risk right now.
