A 10-year-old girl is in a coma after being hit by a car at a crossing at an intersection in Tokyo's Tachikawa, police said Sunday.
According to police, the accident took place at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. TBS reported that the girl was with two friends when she was hit by a car driven by a 26-year-old man.
The girl was taken to hospital with severe injuries to her body, police said, adding that neither of her friends were injured.
There are no traffic lights at the intersection.

In my experience, J drivers never have the courtesy to stop for whomsoever at such places.

Cars have priority in Japan. They have since the big trade wars with the US in the 80s.

I can't count the amount of times I gave nearly been hit by cars on pedestrian crossings. I've had cars swerve and just go around me while I was in the crossing. It's disgraceful how arrogant many drivers are. But, one should not be surprised cos the cops do bugger all about it. Hope this girl makes a full recovery and get family sues the ass of this loser!

that's totally wrong and ill informed. Pedestrians have the right of way at all times. Trouble is: lazy assed cops don't push the point apart from twice annual safety drive campaigns.

Me too. And that's when the pedestrian lights are green!!!
A piece of advice to who ever deals with traffic and roads in Japan - if you're not going to put up traffic lights, don't waste any paint painting a crossing on the road. It doesn't help!

So, you were there and saw what happened? When it comes to road safety Japanese children are completely clueless, I am amazed that more of them are not killed very day.

Since we don't know any details of the accident we can only assume what happened. However I have to admit that while some car drivers are complete a-holes, the parents ALSO need to teach their kids more to look left, right, left while crossing the street.

well, now you know where to put traffic lights.

The law on the books say cars must stop for pedestrians at pedxings. Next time your J-friends brag that they are law-abiding ask them whether they stop. My students say they do, but I catch them out. From my experience I estimate 99-99.99% of drivers ignore pedxings.
