A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition after being struck by a train at a station in Hiroshima, police said Monday.

The girl was struck by the train while crossing the tracks at Aki-Nagatsuka Station on the JR West Kabe Line at around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, Fuji TV reported.

Station staff report that the platform slopes down into a narrow path that crosses the tracks. There are no automated gates. The girl was struck as a passenger train pulled out of the station.

Why wasn't one or both of her parents watching her? Parents should never let their children go about unattended.

Who cares about a gate! Why didn't have a bridge or tunnel. Yes I know there are crossing gates all over Japan but they should work to eliminate them. Maybe they should elevate the train lines while interest rates are historically low. Nah, they will just keep doing the "traditional" things no matter how dangerous it is.

Although the cause of this accident isn't clear in the article, automated gates are clearly necessary to prevent kids and people with their faces in smart phones from getting hurt. Hope the girl pulls through.
