10-yr-old boy hanged in park after bag strap gets caught in tree

A 10-year-old boy died after his shoulder bag strap got hooked on a tree branch in a park in Midori Ward, Nagoya, on Thursday afternoon, police said Friday.

Police believe the boy was climbing the tree in Nishikami-no-Kura park around 4 p.m. Apparently he lost his footing. Somehow, the strap on his bag hooked onto a tree branch three meters above ground, leaving the boy hanging, police said. A passerby saw the boy and called police. The boy was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the police, the boy is a fifth grade student at Hirabari-Minami Elementary School. His family said that he often played in the park on holiday or his way home from school.

Good grief, the boy had the bag strap around his neck?

Sad story. Can't really be prepared for those weird accidents. RIP my little friend.

If you have ever carried a bag with the shoulder strap diagonally across your body, you also had the strap around your neck. Not so unusual really.

Shame nobody saw him. How long was he hanging all there by himself? Horrible story, sad for the parents.

Damnit

can't kids climb up and down trees like naturally these days?

RIP, I we live in bizzare times.

Must have been shocking for whoever found him. It's weird the way these freak accidents happen.

pretty vague.... guess we will just have to wait for more info.

There were no friends with him?

THere was nobody else in the park at that time?

How long was he hanging there before someone noticed? Did he die from strangulation which usually takes awhile, or from a snapped/broken neck?

NOONE was around?

Why would you teach kids to climb trees with a bag around their neck?

When I was a kid, you were taught to never climb trees alone and don't carry anything up with you.

This is just too sad.

No 10 y/o kid deserves this tragic accident. Did he died?

Sounds suspicious if you ask me.

Leave your bag at the foot of the tree before climbing, I say. This is a terrible accident. Was the kid playing by himself? I don't think there was any foul play or anything, but was the kid alone?

10 years old?? My own son is 6 and I pray and pray he never has anything horrible like this happen to him, his friends etc..RIP little fella.

Not really. These things happen. The same thing happened to the child of a friend of my parents 40 years ago in Australia. I've heard of weirder accidents than this. Anyway, sad story. RIP.

Are you being serious? No parent teaches their kids to climb a tree with a bag around their neck. Kids just do stupid things. This is a freak accident.

How dreadful. His parents must be devastated. By the way, the same thing nearly happened to my brother once, fortunately he was caught in time.

This is so SAD! My prayers for him and his family. God Bless him.

Such a sad story. My heart is out to the family

Terribly sad event. You would be surprised how many kids get choked by the draw strings on their hoods and by cords on blinds.

Bizarre comments by bizarre people in this thread. Yes, some parks are pretty empty in Japan and you can't see across them for the trees. I think the others have been answered sensibly, but it never ceases to amaze me the bizarre conclustions and questions people ask and the things they say.

It would seem the boy somehow got his neck in the strap, although the article does not say that. I would guess, because I am forced to guess, that his shoulder straps were loose, like so many kids here have them, and that allowed his head through the strap on one side. His bag might have got stuck, and as he tried to free it he turned his head and it went into the strap then he lost his footing for the bag holding him back.

Foul play is also possible, but the details are too slim to run that direction.

Those school bags are very expensive. I'm not surprised he climbed the tree with it on.
