Around 1,000 chickens died in a fire at a chicken ranch in Izumi, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Sunday morning.

According to police, the fire was reported at about 7:20 a.m. Sunday. NTV reported that firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze after 30 minutes.

The ranch has about 14,000 chickens and 1,000 died in the fire, police said. None of the ranch workers suffered any injuries.

Police said a defect in an electrical circuit of the heating unit may have been responsible for the fire.

There are not enough details in this report, but in the Japanese news it said the building was 830 square meters or almost 9,000 square feet and it contained 14,000 chickens. In the US, factory farms are commonly 20,000 square feet and contain 25,000 birds. Though not as big, the density is equivalent and we can suspect this is a factory farm where broiler chickens are jammed in tighter than morning rush-hour commuters in Tokyo. If a fire breaks out, huge numbers will quickly perish. From a life of living hell into the flames of death, just so people can eat cheap chicken every day. If we are to eat meat, isn't it better to eat healthy and humanely raised animals far more infrequently?

Must have been horrible for those poor chickens being cooked alive.

Sometimes it is hard to justify human actions towards our fellow creatures.

It was probably horrible for those poor chickens simply being alive. What warispeace said.

Unlike many USA states that have huge lands in former cowboy poor towns, Japan do not have lands. Don;t Japanese chicken farms have more than one story for chicken coups? Like 3. 4. 5 stories? Yo-kei kumiai, they are called.

Spot on. Reconfirms my decision not to eat chicken unless I know they come from a real farm. The space situation you describe also means that the birds are stuffed with chemical and antibiotics to prevent diseases which would spread like wildfire otherwise. And all this chemical gunk ands up in our food. Thanks but no thanks.

Those are egg-laying chicken and wouldn't have ended up in a super anyway.

Just you get milk and meat cows. Either way feel sorry for them.

This happens all too often in Japan, I wonder if there is not more to it. Just after JP revived an award for its respect for food and nature it hardly seems deserved on the back of the labeling scandal.

Can you imagine the smell? I'm salivating just thinking about it.

It's ME, the old birds when finished with egg laying will end up in chicken nuggets etc, just like old milk cows will be ground up into hamburgers etc.
