Nagoya government officials said Thursday that around 100,000 dead fish had been found in a canal between May 3 and May 6.
The Nagoya Port Association said dead gizzard shad and gobies were found in an 8-kilometer-long stretch of canal between Nakagawa and Minato wards, Fuji TV reported.
A similar incident occurred two years ago, killing 230,000 fish.
Experts suggested one reason the fish may have died is because sludge at the bottom of the canal depleted the amount of oxygen in the water.
Residents complained Thursday about the smell of dead fish. The cleanup is expected to take another day.

I call BS. If the sludge were depleting the oxygen in the canal, then it would be over a sustained period, and the canal would be devoid of fish. That these events seem to be acute suggests to me that someone has been dumping something into the water.

I didn't even need to read the article to say lack of o2. The problem is actually the re-diverting of all the rivers in Japan, making them deeper and faster (over wider and slower) pushes more fish into smaller rivers.

But with Japan's Secrecy Laws, nobody will know who is dumping what, when, where and why.

Thats not true. What about "red tides". These happen seemingly overnight and can cause mass deaths.
I mean.... how long do you think you would last with out O2.... I don't think it would be a sustained period. The sludge could have been sitting at a certain level for a long time, allowing the fish to survive, and a single event put the levels over the edge. Broke the camels back if you will. A person can live on something as low as 12% o2 like on the top of a mountain. (20-21% is normal at sea level). If the level drop to 11% you will die. Not life is optimal at 12% you would be alive and at 11% you would more than likely soon be dead.

The secrecy law must be very effective as it was coveted yesterday on all news programs.
Glen I know you dislike Japan but at times I shake my head at your posts.

Nope, I'm just a sceptic. A healthy thing to be. Back on topic, I hope they get the mess cleaned up soon
