“End-stage capitalism dystopia repackaged as a heartwarming story”. Imagine still working at 108.

that would make her a barber baba.

Good for her..
An example of vitality and longevity.

Insted of being a potato couch, cut the whine and put yourself to work..
Learn from her..

Awesome and inspiring, Congratulations Mam.

Great for her. Congratulations! Great to hear that she's still continuing her profession and seems happy. I'm sure we all can learn from her and her inspiration.

May blessings continue coming your way, and that your departure from this World will be in peace.

I hope she’s working because she genuinely enjoys cutting hair. But if she’d rather spend her time doing something else—or even just relax—but has to work out of financial necessity, I wish the reporter had covered that aspect.

It is amazing that she is strong and healthy enough to work at that age.

I'm a cheapskate and cut my hair with clippers but I'll have to grow it and go and see Shitsui san for a "shichi-san". I wonder how many she's done in 89 years' of business.

If she wasn't working, she'd be long gone, staying engaged and active is the path to a long life, not a couch potato complaining about 'work'. Great role model, but only for those who are positive and energetic, not negative and lethargic!

Going to get my haircut with my son after school, lady that cuts our hair is not 108 but she's not young either and does a great job.
Service includes making your customers happy, getting to know them etc. Imagine how many customers value Hakoshi-san? Can't buy that, she's a rich lady indeed, not a negative unhappy sloth!
Three goals
Some people actually enjoy their work. If that is the case why not keep working until a late age. I see some who do not enjoy their work. Some have done well financially but at a toll. Bad health, aged quickly.
Fighto!
Congratulations to her! Clearly, her job is her life - it likely keeps her alive and happy. Chatting to all her customers every day would keep her socially active, too.
Hoping she can continue working until 120!

I'm glad and actually pretty impressed but I don't know if I'd have enough guts to go under her scissors and razor.

How do you know this?
Plenty of people fall off the perch young while working. Some jobs destroy your health and knock years off you.
Still, if you enjoy what you are doing and it isn’t detrimental to your health, keep going.
Respect to Ms Hakoishi.

Great, amazing, but I'll hold off letting her use an open razor on my neck.
HopeSpringsEternal
That's how we know she'd be long gone, look at the smile in the picture, now imagine her stuck in an empty home doing NOTHING, Boredom = DEATH
GuruMick
No bloodstains on the towels behind her...gotta be a good sign

Congratulations Ms Hakoichi!
Outstanding achievement. You must have some stories to tell!
HopeSpringsEternal
Often FAR MORE dangerous to let your wife cut your hair, especially if she's no spring chicken either...because wives can have bad 'motives' and surely another reason why Hakoichi San has so many happy customers!

Short back and sides please, lol

My barber is rather long in the tooth, but I love the guy. His daughter lives in Virginia, but he doesn't speak a word of English, which is how I prefer it. Sometimes, I drop by his shop just to chat.

Wallace, U trained your beloved to trim your hair, mmmhh open razor, Dung and gone. Braun trimmer recommended.
What an outstanding human she is. A(n) hair cutter, without any of her early years clients to see and chat to now, tremendous human.

Scissors and a comb are all that is needed. Trimmer for the lower neck back.
HopeSpringsEternal
Barbers always say, "those with hairy backs are missing a lot of hair up top" and they're right, the baldies almost always have hairy backs!

I don't understand why people here are voting down these comments of that lady's love and continuation of her livelihood at her age.
mu-da
Most ignorant and ideology contaminated comment of all. She has a job she still can do in her age. Great. She doesn't sit alone and lonely in front of television but gets regualar visitors every day with whom she can chat with and such be part of a network and community. I'm sure she got regular customers she's had for decades and is close with and close with their families. She will not die alone and be found after months like many (in Sweden for example, not only Japan). For myself, as long as I can walk (now 75) I'll work. I despise social security systems like in Europe where you are forced out of your job even you want to continue working.
