11,000 displaced residents yet to ask TEPCO for compensation

About 11,000 residents of Fukushima Prefecture, who were displaced after the nuclear accident in March 2011, are yet to file claims for compensation with nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO).

According to TEPCO, of the 165,824 people who were ordered to evacuate after the accident, around 11,000 people from 13 municipalities have not claimed compensation for damages, Fuji TV reported Friday. TEPCO said the right to claim compensation will expire in September 2014.

TEPCO said it is trying to locate the displaced residents and is urging them to file compensation claims as soon as possible.

On June 3, the utility sent out the 8th compensation application forms for compensation for life and physical damages.

If you are applying for compensation for the first time or have a change of address, contact the Fukushima Nuclear Power Compensation Support Office at 0120-926-404. The office is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

I can't believe that there is an expiration date on filing a claim. it's outrageous! Some of these families will NEVER be able to go back home... And, now you are telling them that they only have just over one year to file a claim? Some of the stupidest things I have ever heard of or read comes out of Japan...How sad!

it is important for the govt/tepco to confirm the safety of these 11,000 residents first.

Most people in Japan have no way of knowing their real level of exposure. Japan goverment has been doing it's best to hide the facts right alongside Tokyo Electric Power Co.

While this figure represents less than 10% of the total, 11,000 is still quite a high number. My guess would be that a large number of these people are some combination of quite elderly and/or living alone. These people are the most likely to be out of the loop and unlikely to be making informed decisions independently. From TEPCOs perspective, I wouldn't be trying very hard to find them.

For the govt yes, for TEPCO they don't care, this is a cold corporation with no compassion, currently living on public tax money waiting the time to recover and then go back to their private investors.

So sorry guys!

Money's all used up.

We used it all counting turtle eggs and promoting wine and cheese in Hokkaido.

It takes time to complete a 60-page form, especially for the elderly. Yeah, TEPCO was asked before their second bail out to make it easier, but does anyone believe they did? Meanwhile, TEPCO makes statements that they want to get back in the black this fiscal year, but need a third time bail out to meet the needs of very strictly guarded requests to date. The government now controls 51% of TEPCO, so they are to blame as well. What an absolutely pathetic excuse of humanity TEPCO is.

But hey, whaling, counting turtles, and wine and cheese parties made up from international donations? no problem. All this and the J-government has the gall to complain about dictatorships and how money never reaches its targets. Amazing.... if you are not a Japanese politician.

They will callthemselves the TEVIAS. Or tepco victims asociatio and they will try to live for free the rest of their lifes and will seek compensation forever. Just like comfort women

Why bother at this point? It'll just be taxpayer money getting siphoned away anyway.

So true, they have seats and a president at the board of directors.

TEPCO said it is trying to locate the displaced residents and is urging them to file compensation claims as soon as possible.

I find this really really really hard to believe.

You are a big part of the problem. Many of these people already face stigma; kids who have moved from Fukushima to other areas of Japan are bullied by others, or shunned completely, by people like yourself who stomp on them for simply being VICTIMS. Shame on you. I imagine when the big one hits your area you'll be dancing to a different tune, if you are lucky enough to survive.

@kiyoshiMukai - come up here to Fukushima (and other places where 160,000 plus adults and kids were forced to flee) and tell those victims - tens of thousands of whom can NEVER return to live due admitted to corporate/government negligence - that they simply "wish to live for free forever on compensation". Oh, that's right, you haven't got the balls.

Those who left to save their life are now afraid of approaching TEPCO for compensation, isn't it strange?
