A 16-year-old boy died and another boy suffered a broken leg after they were hit by a train in a tunnel in Kashiwara City, Osaka, on Sunday morning.

NTV quoted police as saying that the two boys were part of a group of 13 boys and girls aged 12 to 16, who had become lost after returning from the mountains. They left their bicycles and were walking along the tracks when the accident occurred at around 1 a.m.

The driver of the train told police he spotted the two boys in the tunnel and applied the emergency brake but was unable to avoid hitting them. None of the other children were hurt, police said.

My goodness at 1 am. This had to be the last train of the night. Such an unfortunate incident for all those involved.

That's a such a shame. He had his whole life ahead of him, but had to leave sooner than expected. My condolences for his family. But we also have to be thankful that no other deaths came out of this, but what a tragedy it is.

WilliB. its not only a broken leg. He watched someone he knew die in front of his very eyes. Survivors guilt is a strong feeling.

mikihouse I agree, and a sad story, but if they were in a tunnel how come they didn't hear the train approaching ?

I went all over hell and back as a kid, and could find my way home from anywhere I went at 9 years old. Here we have 13, 12 to 16, lost still a 1 a.m.?

This fatality is a direct result of Japan's severe regimentation of the lives of youth. The instant they get some little bit of freedom, they get lost, and I mean that in both the physical and metaphysical sense.
