16-year-old girl hangs herself after message on blog tells her to die

Police on Sunday said they are investigating the death of a 16-year-old high school girl who hanged herself on Thursday apparently after receiving an anonymous message on her school blog telling her to die.

According to police, the girl -- a student at Mihagino Girls' High School -- hanged herself in her room at home on Thursday morning. Her parents notified police and the school. The parents told police that she had left a suicide note saying that a message on her blog had told her to kill herself. A school official said the message had been sent to the girl's blog on Monday.

Tragic, to say the least.....

Sad. I'm very sorry. When I was at High School and this kid tried to bully me, I got into trouble because I gave him a good thumping. But what do you know, I wasn't touched after that. But I guess it's hard for kids these days to stand up for themselves??

surely the police have the resources to track you blogged her....

I wonder how involved the parents were in this girl's day-to-day life? Seems many parents chat to their kids a few minutes at night and on the weekend and that's it! Especially if both parents work. Very sad.

Whoa another suicide? Like I said it seems there is some new suicide story every day here on JT. How sad. She must've had undiagnosed/untreated mental illness.

Patrick_Smash...Disagree compelety. If you have ever raised teenage kids, you would know that the mental pressure on them is enormous. They do not have to have "mental problems" in order to at least ponder suicide. Being bullied or ostrasized can make it seem like there is no sense in living, particularly in Japan, where acceptance is everything. And, schools rarely pick up the signs. I was lucky -- one of my kids was the victim of horrendous rumors that went on for a couple of months, and put him under tremendous strain. But, he came to me in time, and with the help of the school counselor/administration, and a private counselor, got him sorted out. My sincerest condolences to this girl's parents. They will be asking themselves "Why" and "What if" for the rest of their lives.

@medievaltimes: Very true and then in some cases they either go kill themselves or they kill/attack others, destroy flowers or crash with their car into a group of elementary school students. I guess it has partly to do with their history with harakiri and dying with honor etc. Japanese should value life much more and take negative comments about them less serious.

This is much like the Megan Meier Suicide Case. hope they find who did it...

I don't wish this upon any parents. No other tragedy in life can top losing your child.

Oh really? What about the fathers who physically/sexually abuse their daughters? Who knows what else this poor girl was experiencing in her home life as well.

Very incomplete story. There is no way that a single "die" message led to a girl killing herself.

Such a waste! Just another victim of this epidemic. I wonder how long it will be and how many more teenagers will take their own lives before the Jp Gov. decides to take real steps to address the problem of teenage suicide and suicide in general. 30,000 suicides a year and most of them teenagers is something you don't see on the tourism advertising. There was some laimo jumped off the Musashino line this morning, just to add one more to the total.

Very sad.

It has been my experience that Japanese people of all ages are extremely sensitive to any kind of negative comment about them. Of course nobody likes negative comments but people in Japan seem to really take criticism/stupid comments in a bad way.

@Nordon - yeah i know.. crazy @thebottomline - i agree with you completely.

it's too bad the culture of ignore it doesn't extend to the world of bullying for these kids. I feel for the poor girl.

All so hard to accept for these days students to children to adults have the use of the computer world.

Bullying to me, a male, was easy to take care of in past years as I was thicked skinned & experienced in street fighting so I never started class or street fights.

Mind you back some yrs ago bullying was not recognized amongst fenales at school YET it was there & in later yrs the fighting going on in the washrooms of a skating rink, (part of my duties), was beyond belief in the women's section while so rarely in the mens washroom.

Times have change & in their teens so many of the younger people can be hurt by simple words & we, as adults, do not realize how sensative words or looks are to younger people PLUS it is not easy to deal with teen-aged people or understand how they look at things for so many are looking through a different window then us & we do not realize it.

How sad indeed... when i was bullied in school (primary school) i just asked the kid why he bullied me and asked if he wanted to be friends... were still friends to this day forward... that was about 12 years ago.

More people need to start standing up to bullies especially in Japan, where i hear of cases of suicide due to bullying. Its horrible how most parents dont take matters into their hands a little more, its their child for god sake, their flesh and blood. Do what ever it takes to find the root of cause following them, speaking to them, bribing them to find out the cause of distress anything works aslong as you sort it out. (except murdering the cause and doing anything that would be against the law lol)

I don't see the harm in discussing it over "cookies and milk". She may have had tunnel vision, and not see or think clearly because of it. Not knowing her family or school situation, it's hard to say one way or another. But most seemingly insurmountable problems your average 16 year old faces can be resolved without resorting to suicide. My condolences to the family.

wish she could have discussed the matter with her family

amazing how some people can be so short-sighted. Most people

who turn to such diar straits don't feel they are ABLE to just discuss it over cookies and milk with their family.

bullying is a sad fact of life in Japan, it is pervasive, it is integral to the culture, sad, very sad but also too true

Kids have really fragile self-esteem. Parents need to spend more time instilling self-worth and a positive self-image into their kids. Love goes a long way, when it's genuinely felt.

Of course this girl didn't do this only because it said to on her blog. Probably got a lot garbage from other kids, which will probably come to light shortly.

She might have learned at school "do as you are told",

bawhahahahaha, thx for the laughs

Again, there's probably a lot more to this sad story than 'girl receives message then kills self.'

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Obviously, it's a case of cyber bullying and she couldn't handle the pressure. It's not a case of blindly following orders. Come on people.

While it is a sad story, I wonder if there is more, and the message on the blog was just a pretext. She might have learned at school "do as you are told", but she should also have learned where such order comes from, and if it is to be taken serious. Something is missing.

Sad.

999 out of 1,000 people would have ignored that message, yet it goes to the one person who is probably mentally unstable, insecure and vulnerable. I wonder if the sender knew the girl's personality and whether he or she was deliberately trying to push her over the edge.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

it was probably just the tip of the iceberg. she probably endured hellish bullying. I hope they track the message leaver and give the animal a thoroughly good drubbing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Lemmings. I do feel sorry for the loss of life, but seriously.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So, if the message had told her to paint her arse blue and walk down the street naked, would she have done it?
