Tokyo Sky Tree, which opens next May 22, will be illuminated by 1,995 LEDs developed by Panasonic Electric Works Co.
The lighting will have two patterns -- "Sophisticated,” which is a pale blue inspired by the Sumida River, and “Elegant,” which is an Edo purple and gold leaf motif.
An all-LED radio tower was erected in Guangzhou, China in October of last year, but Tokyo Sky Tree will be the first of its kind in Japan. LED energy consumption will be low with “Sophisticated” cutting energy use by 43% and “Elegant” using 38% less electricity, according to Tobu Railway Co.

'Sophisticated' is exactly what I think of when I see the pale blue of the Sumida River. I have no doubt that Tokyo Sky Tree (blessed be its name!) will be the very embodiment of Japan's purity of spirit. Along with manga and anime, TST will bring the world to Tokyo, the jewel of East Asia.

So much for saving energy in the Tokyo area, eh? Waste of power.

No lighting at all would use 100% less electricity.

Whilst in times of critical power shortages. Only aircraft warning lights should be used.

Would somebody please remind me why this thing actually got built in the first place? Instead of, say, channeling the billions and billions of yen it took into, say, oh I don't know, it's a stupid idea, but.... CHILDCARE SERVICES??
How about an upper age limit for Japanese politicians?

Tranel.
It was build for the same reason the old Tokyo Tower was build.
It is a transmission tower for digital broadcast, the old Tokyo Tower was for analog and Radio broadcasts. But the surrounding buildings got higher and digital can broadcast over a wider region.
Well know fact from the beginning.

How about no power please

"Tokyo Sky Tree"
Are they going to open any other branches?

I think it will make a pretty sight at night, and add some variety to the Tokyo skyline. Japan needs anything that can cheer its people up right now. Oh, and it wasnt just built for digital broadcasting. It was sponsored by Tobu Railways to boost the East Side of Tokyo and also the depressed Saitama area. Hence the "Rising East" advertising material. Ochiai is perhaps one of the most boring and rundown areas of Tokyo`s shitamachi, so hopefully this tower will give it a boost and help the economy.

Good one, Serrano!
Yes, it is built for digital broadcasting. Plus drawing more yen into the Sumida area. Who knows how much in payoffs when into this. I for one am looking forward to it. The kitch power is astronomical. Too bad it was in such a nice, sleepy little neighborhood. No more. A flying saucer in the shape of the Eiffle Tower has landed. So bizarre.
