Two high school girls were killed and three other students injured after a car hit a sign on a highway in Fuefuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture, police said Friday.

According to police, the accident happened at around 6 a.m. on Thursday. TV Asahi reported that two high school boys and three high school girls, all aged 18, were in the car. Two of the students had just graduated. Police said the group was returning from a game center where they had been since 11 p.m. the previous night.

Police said it appears the car was speeding, TV Asahi reported.

Greapper1, a bit of a sexist comment. I would think the boys were in front, and the three girls were in back, and they were not wearing their seatbelts. Whatever the case may be, it's a sad story. If they were at a game center from 11pm the previous night, the driver probably was speeding and dozing off. Agree with Fadamor, "a recipe for disaster more often than not."

What a way to go, just after graduating! What a pity!

In the U.S.: At 16 you can drive; at 18 you're an adult, can vote, and can die for your country; at 21 you can drink alcohol.

Sad to hear of this. All night partying - even if alcohol is not a factor - plus a teen aged driver are a recipe for disaster more often than not.

smith, you can get it at 18 (for cars, motorcycle at 16). I know, it's strange you're not considered adult, not fully responsible legally, even can't have a beer, but you can drive a 1 ton vehicle. RIP. by the way, everybody speeds on the highway (limit is 100 km/h, but usually 80), how much did they speed? combined with a sleepless night, that's a recipe for disaster

Sucks even worse for the families of these kids involved. RIP.

Thats a really tragic story and my thoughts go out to the families of those killed. Could it of been the case of a teen lad trying to impress the girls by going at a high speed? Or just tired from lack of sleep and lost concentration.

It was late. My guess would be that The driver may have fallen asleep.

Very sad. They should have stopped at a hotel or net cafe or manga lounge over night.

timeon: Thanks. I believe someone else told me that as well, once, but I forgot. It does indeed seem strange that you can get a license at 18 but not be considered adult enough to drive it.

I also didn't realize they were running on no sleep.

In my country, it is legal to drive when you are 18. RIP.. anyway

Police said the group was returning from a game center where they had been since 11 p.m. the previous night.

Another key factor that the police should look at is what they were doing up until they went to the arcade. When mishaps like this are investigated for people like pilots, train operators, etc, they look at the past 48 hours to see if they had had the proper amount of rest. Don't know what these kids were doing before, but I can imagine that if they are staying up all night on a Thursday night, that they probably had been out for the previous days having a good time with no school. Nothing wrong with that, but I guess they didn't realize that there were not as invincible as they thought.

My friends taught these kids, they were all good kids who were just celebrating that they'd finally graduated high school. All of them even had college plans figured out, so please stop talking about them like they were lowlifes.

Oh and no, it was a boy driving.

Too young, too many hormones on over drive all in a car?? I hope no booze was involved, so sad, where were the parents?? All I know as that these parents now must be getting ready for funeral preparations. RIP young kids

Well that sucks.

18 is not considered a child. 18 is considered a legal minor. It is not remotely the same thing. A minor simply does not have all rights and priviledges yet. 18 year olds are not allowed to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, etc. But they are allowed to drive and are over the age of consent.

I wish intelligent posters would stop talking like they are unemployed drop out trailer park residents. Child and legal minor are not the same thing.

Don't you have to be 20 to get a license (ie. adult)? In any case, RIP to those that died. I would guess that they were not wearing seatbelts and hence died, but there's no details as such.

10,000 yen says it was a girl driving.
