A man and a woman in their 50s were killed Wednesday morning when the motorbike they were riding collided with a truck in a tunnel in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 2 a.m. in the tunnel on National Route 1, Sankei Shimbun reported. The bike hit the truck which was coming from the opposite direction.
Police said the male bike rider was pronounced dead at the scene while his female passenger was taken to hospital where she died shortly after arrival. The truck driver and a passenger sustained light injuries.
Police said there was a slight curve at the spot in the tunnel where the crash occurred but they have not yet determined if the truck or the motorbike crossed the center line.

Impossible to say given the lack of information, and likely since the bike riders both died it'll be impossible to tell who was in the wrong. It's easy to imagine the truck was speeding around the curve and over the center, but also just as easy to imagine the bike doing the same. Tragic either way.

As someone who soley rides a motorcycle, I have some/many tunnels in Japan are very poorley lit and not my favorite to drive through. Some are so dark The only way not to wreck is to do your best to simply follow the tail light in front of you. When there is oncoming traffic their lights seem so bright that your own headlight is all but useless.

The truck would remain over the line if it had crossed and crashed (unless the driver was particularly devious, I suppose).
I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that the bike was going like a bat outta hell.

I can't say anything about the few information we got here, rest of peace to the victims. could be a sleepy or drunk accident also bad function of the vehicles/motorcycle.

To the truck driver, a good drive recorder makes a big difference in proving you're not guilty.

Guilty or innocent the truck driver is in a whole heap a trouble, this being Japan.
