2 killed after sports car crashes on Tochigi highway

Two people were killed after the sports car they were in burst into flames following a crash with another car on a highway in Kanuma, Tochigi Prefecture, on Friday night.

According to police, the crash occurred on a prefectural highway at around 11:30 p.m. The driver of another vehicle said the sports car, a Nissan Fairlady Z, was hit by a gray car turning right from the opposite lane while making a U-turn. The Fairlady Z then crashed into a roadside tree, bursting into flames. The other car kept going.

Police said both occupants of the sports car died in the flames that took about 40 minutes to extinguish. They were so badly burnt that their gender could not be immediately determined.

Police said they are examining surveillance camera footage to try and identify the other car.

I truly hope they're able to identify the other car and driver, as the accident was not only their fault, driving away like that was unforgivable, the bastards.

Wow how horrid. Your life can be taken from you in a moment and you may not even be identifiable after.

Stupidity while driving is bad enough but to drive off and leave your victims to die in horrific circumstances is as garypen said, unforgivable.

Nissan Fairlady Z

Such a beautiful car. My heart goes out to you.

Pretty tragic. RIP. Hope they catch the guilty party and give them the harshest penalty, not just because of the loss of life but if they had stopped and tried to render assistance of some sort, who knows, the car's occupants might have survived.

One must hope that the victims died instantly from the crash, and not from the ensuing fire.

"sports car" seems a prejudicial term here which, to me at least, carries the nuance of irresponsible driving and, for some people here, seems to automatically imply that the "sports car" driver was at fault. Another vehicle pulled directly in front of them from the side, they didn't stand a chance. The other vehicle left the scene of their manslaughter. This story is reminiscent of driving in my State, in the U.S., Oregon (in lowest 5% driving competence level in U.S.according to insurance industry reports, ALL of them!), it is a horrible story of murder by incompetence or distraction or, possibly, intoxication. We'll almost certainly never know. To the two (most probably young) people whose identities may never be published, I mourn your lost lives.

I'm having trouble understanding that. Which car was making the U-turn?

the sports car was hit by a gray car making a U-turn"

Is that not a little different from "*the sports car was hit by a gray car while making a U-turn"*

It's still unclear to me.

The hit-and-run driver of the gray car that made the U-turn causing this accident has been arrested. He is a 50 year-old local resident of Kanuma City and is named as OHASHI, Tsuyoshi. He may not have been expecting the approaching traffic to be moving at extremely high speed--the NISSAN 'Godzilla' is capable of 300+ kilometres per hour, and the accident occurred on a straight stretch of 4-lane road.
