2 women jump to deaths from Osaka condo

Two women apparently committed suicide by jumping from the 14th floor of an apartment building in Osaka, police said.

According to police, a resident of the condo in Kita Ward called 110 at around 3:20 a.m. Monday after hearing loud thuds outside. He said that two women were lying on the ground outside the condo. Fuji TV reported that both women were confirmed dead at the scene. A suitcase, bag and cart were left on the 14th floor near the stairway.

Police said one woman is believed to be in her 60s or early 70s, while the other is thought to be in her 50s. Their bodies were found about 10 meters apart. Both women were wearing black long sleeve shirts and full-length pants along with their shoes.

Not wanting to make light of this, but I thought suicides took their shoes off and then jumped?

Maybe back in the day when those cowardly insane acts had just any meaning behind them.

I don't understand and I guess I never will.

Very strange...In the fall from such a height, they must have been losing their shoes, I guess.

That's a very long way up - plenty of think time before they reached the bottom.

I wonder what the relationship between them was? Family? Though normally that would be reported. Perhaps they were lovers?

That's a very sad end though.

Mother & daughter or lovers.

Today's news just reeks.

Mother offing her 1-yr old, and now this...

I feel sorry for the authorities and rescue workers and medical staff who had to deal with the aftermath of these selfish, pathetic and sickening acts. Did the perpetrators leave enough money to pay for the high cost to the authorities of dealing with the bodies and damage to the street etc? If not, the money will need to be recovered from close relatives.

Paying for damages etc is not something that any 'jumper' ushered in. There is such a thing as insurance, when JR etc charges families for 'monies lost' I always wonder why they don't have insurance to offset those losses. As if the family hasn't suffered enough already. And I'm sure it would be a more streamline way of recovering the losses (not to mention warm-hearted and logical). I'm no expert, but I'm not aware of any other country that do this to families. Makes me sick.

That building complex is 500 meters from where I live....

Too many people on JT are just completely heartless and quick to judge people they know nothing about. We do not know what drove these two ladies to this extreme act. But we can assume it was something profound enough that they thought this made sense. We have no idea what compelled them to do so. What trauma or hardship they faced. Or what they sought to escape from. We just know that whatever it was it motivated this.

Have a heart people. You could find yourself on that ledge one day and not be able to even believe your life brought you to that point.

Once again, if you consider them leaving all behind, inflicting endless pain on those close to them or people around you who know that you will never physically smile again or a random bystander who wintesses that insane act without any merit something to be sympathized with you are not stupid or sorts, you are just too ignorant, too entranched in your "pink" vision of world. Instead of asking for help, they jump from the building. Instead of doing the right thing, they burn themselves in the name of it. This is a tragedy, of course. People lost lives, we grieve. But those who have to live on knowing that something twisted like that happened, do you feel any sympathy for them? That they are to bear the memory, torturing them at any given moment, reminding them of how frail is the life and how futile were those years they had lived only to end it themselves?? Do you feel any sympathy for those alive?! Where were the values that kept them humane? They would never allow them to do so. It was romantic back in the day where people thought murder was a thing of honour. But now?... I understand you are not saying this out of malice. You just mistake true compassion for automatic condolences because something bad just happened.

I don't understand why so many people here do this, but what I do notice is that there are many suicides on TV dramas here. Maybe the script writers should take notice of this and stop writing these events into their dramas.

Exactly, anyone endorosing it or talking about it in anything but negative light is participating in further occurances. If they show it on TV they must make sure it is seen as it is - negative. No romantism now, since this is not a joke anymore.

Daniel, apart from the fact that your rant is bordering on incoherent, you don't know anything about them. You don't know what preceded this act, or what they have gone through. You talk about compassion, but you have none to offer those who died.

I'm completely with RainMonster on this one.

Debucho, you need to have a long, hard look at yourself.

Prove it wasn't a murder-suicide. How can you be sure it wasn't a push and a jump?

I believe JR introduced such 'charges' in the early 1980s. (They were JNR back then.) There had been a spate of suicides on the Yamanote line. The charges were introduced to act as a deterrent, not to recover costs. The disruption caused by such suicides was huge, affecting large numbers of commuters. It had some effect as the number of train suicides seemed to drop, at least for a while. I'm not aware of any charges applying for suicides like the one in the article.

I guess I can not prove a point of moral cowardice towards false humanism. I am too weak by myself to do so. Though then if you see that the suicide can be justified, in your eyes, (even when there is no information what happened prior), I should not have expected much from any of you.

It's unfathomable, but I have a suspicion that when Japanese insurance companies stop paying out on suicide, that there may be some change in the statistics.

For example people will stop thinking that their death will be monetarily rewarded to their families. Some are surelly doing this madness to ensure their family has money to survive. Selling your life for money. Why not go sell yourself to science for money? The difference is scarce.

Suitcase etc. outside the door. Perhaps they had been evicted from their apartment.

miyakojimadan, I live in Nagarahigashi 2, too. Where exactly did it happen?

About two months ago a young house wife jumped from our condo... She hit the roof of the bicycle parking area and bounced off. My wife saw the ambulance take her away, not sure what happened after to her.

A few years ago, suicide pacts became popular, and it was the trend to find a group of people like you who wanted to die and for them to meet and off themselves together. The fact that their clothing seems to have matched might indicate that's what this was.

I am under the impression that life insurance doesn't pay out on taking your own life. Do you guys above know differently? Also, if you cannot fathom what may push people over the edge, you either have lived a sheltered life, or perhaps have not experienced much. Of course people feel for those around them, too. But people don't take their own life over light matters. As far as 'getting help' is concerned, there simply isn't any available in Japan and you will be stigmatized for seeking it. It's not rocket science. Stop blaming the victims and direct that to the sources.

In Japan insurance will payout if you've been on it for more than two years. Though I'm not sure:

1) If this is for every plan, or just some. But I believe it's the standard

2) If the two year period is variable. But I believe that also is the standard.

There is a payout on some or all life insurance policies even in the first year, although it's not the full payout, this according to my friend who's an insurance claims adjuster.

There was even an academic study claiming that Japan could reduce suicide by preventing insurance payouts for suicides. March is the time of missing fingers, according to my friend, as company heads look for ways to balance the books before the end of the fiscal year.
