Two women were killed by an express train in Ishii, Tokushima Prefecture, police said Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 8:57 p.m. on Saturday on a crossing near Ishii Station on the JR Tokushima line, Sankei Shimbun reported.

The train driver was quoted by police as saying he saw two women slip under the crossing bar and walk onto the tracks. He applied the emergency brake but couldn't stop in time.

Nobody on the train was hurt.

Police are trying to identify the two women who appeared to be in their 30s or 40s.

It seems like a double suicide. How horribly tragic! My heart goes out to their family and friends whose heads must be spinning in disbelief now. I wonder what the life circumstances were of the 2 ladies that propelled them to end everything. THIS is the information needed---even about mothers who kill their own children---to know what kind of help women need to better cope in this tough society.

....or maybe they were just trying to beat the train.

Most probably a horrible accident

Train drivers, no matter how much training they have received, are left traumatised .

In the UK there are some TV programs showing what stupid people have done IE driving over a train level crossing whilst the barriers are going down, and running in front of a train, 90% of them just can't wait 2 minutes but they will risk there lives and others. could this be the case here? could these two ladies not wait for two minutes?
