2-year-old boy falls to his death from 4th-floor apartment

A two-year-old boy fell to his death from his family’s apartment in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, on Saturday.

According to police, a passerby called police at around 9:50 a.m. and said a boy, bleeding from a head injury, was lying on the ground in front of a municipal apartment building. Kyodo News reported that the boy, Toma Shono, was taken to hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

Police said the boy lived with his parents in an apartment on the fourth floor. At the time of the incident, Toma was at home with his 37-year-old father who told police he had left Toma in his room and that he didn’t know his son was not there until he heard the siren of an ambulance arriving at the scene.

Police believe the child may have opened the window in his room and fallen out.

Here we go again. It's a shame the child locks and safety nets didn't stop him. Oh wait... TIJ.

Yeah, the second such incident in about a week. Something needs to be done.

Tears in heaven. (Some Eric Clapton fans might know the reference).

This is the second time this week a 2 year old boy has fallen to his death.

In the previous article everyone was up in arms (reasonably so) because the parents had left the child home alone. But this one shows how easily this can happen even when the parents are home, the poor father was in the next room.

Japanese apartments are absolute death traps for toddlers.

Clapton's son was a 4 1/2-year-old son and fell out of a condo window on the 49 floors. Torn Clapton's heart right out.

Bars on the windows are easy to fit and even window locks are cheap to buy. You can open the window and then lock it in place.

We have two safety bars on each 2nd-floor window.

Climbing aids and window locks are commonly forgotten or even misunderstood. In public housing the local authority should have a duty of care to ensure window locks or restrictors are fitted. In fact it amazes me that manufacturers aren’t required to ensure simple safety features are included as standard.

Wow Bungle, have you brought forth Lex Luthor? The vast majority of child locks defeat most kids until they’re passed the age of awareness of common dangers.

Any action or inaction without insight is a terrible thing.

What's up with these parents? There's not really any excuse, the window should be locked if the child is left alone.

If you weren’t there, you don’t know how it happened
