A two-year-old girl fell from the window of her 5th-floor apartment in Tokyo on Tuesday and survived.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. at an apartment building in Minami-kasai, Edogawa Ward, Fuji TV reported. A passerby called 119 to report that a girl had fallen out of a window.
Police said the girl broke her left leg. She was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.
The girl’s mother told police she was in another room with her six-year-old son at the time and did not notice that her daughter had gone. Police said the girl wandered into another room and apparently climbed up onto a chest of drawers and then fell out of the window which wasn’t locked.

Amazing she lived. A fall over 3 stories is often fatal. Hope the fractured leg at that age doesn't result in permanent impairment.

A two year old can easily get past most window locks.
The overcrowding of Japanese homes and apartments makes incidents like this way more common. The rooms are so small in most that it is impossible to avoid putting furniture in front of at least some windows, which provides a stepping stone for toddlers to reach them.
Combine that aith the idiotically designed child locks, which are themselves put within reach of children, and its a recipe for disaster. We moved out of a sixth floor apartment when our son wa 2 in part because it was a death trap in that regard.

Thank God she survived. Amazing happy ending to what could have been a heartbreaking tragedy.
We parents and guardians must childproof our homes and be vigilant at all times.

@rainyday - This is true. You'd be surprised what kids can do. Never underestimate their abilities.

Glad she's relatively okay.
Moral of the story: Lock your windows if you have toddlers/young children.
Do the hustle
I’ll bet the window is locked in the future. Glad she is gone ok.

Drawers + Window unlocked, TV stand + Window unlocked, Bench in the Balcony! common guys... Toddlers are very quick. They could do very dangerous things even before you think. So prepare your environment toddler friendly. Buying toys would not just enough.

Actually, a two year cannot get past certified childproof window locks. It can get past standard locks, of course. I replaced most of the locks in my home with childproof locks that had a secrete button and needed a two finger action to open them. My son was about 6 when he worked them out.

Hence my use of the phrase "most". The vast majority of housing in Japan has standard locks which are easy to get past for even a two year old and that probably helps explain why these incidents are so common.

@SirFrancisW, Re 4th Floor fall survivability.
Yesterday morning in Okayama a 2nd year junior high school student jumped from the fourth floor, but a teacher broke her fall and they are now both in hospital.
