I don't doubt that the whole stable went out there, but I don't think more than two or three were involved in the actual rescue because 20 people would be getting in the way of each other
that person
I’d love to see that in action!

Finally, some good news to start the day. I'm really wondering how the rescue played out, did the wrestlers just reached out to her, did they use rope or a pole, or did some of them got on the water to pull her out.
Ah_so
This will be in the foreign press in the next couple of days - they love a quirky happen story.

The woman did not fall into the river by accident -- it was a deliberate suicide attempt. Why was this fact omitted from the article?

If so, she wasn't serious about it as inhaling water would have killed her almost instantly. Perhaps she had second thoughts?

Come on give CREDIT where it is due!!!
If this ""man"" didn't first grab hold & call for help the woman may well have drowned
The sumo wrestlers HELPED rescue, the dude who first grabbed hold likely SAVED her life, just sayin!!
Strangerland
Maybe out of respect for the woman who is clearly not in a healthy state of mind.

How many sumo wrestlers does it take to rescue a drowning woman?
Apparently, 20!
Bugle Boy of Company B
Maybe it takes only one, but twenty were willing to do it.

Why does it take 20 Sumo wrestlers to rescue one drowning lady? Two for the rescue while 18 perform chiri-chozu :-)

Readers, there is no need to make fun of the sumo wrestlers.

She must have been saying “I can swim”
because if she were drowning then she wouldn’t be talking....obviously!

It's amazing how so many people who were not there seem to know exactly what happened.

Sumos are surprisingly buoyant. There was a segment on TV where they put some sumos through a series of athletic ability tests and obstacles. The sumo was unable to pass the underwater test because he was too buoyant to dive.
Fighto!
Good for them. These 20 will never be Yokozuna, but they have achieved something far greater - hero status. I hope they are given an award.
I hope the woman recovers fully.

Now I'm missing going to see sumo even more!

What an awesome mental image and feel good story! Sumo success! All 20 of them out there! Just gold.
Zaphod
Rescued by 20 sumos? Would love to see that if there is a video.

"It's amazing how so many people who were not there seem to know exactly what happened."
Televised news reports had much more information than this scant article -- a TV camera crew was on the scene to show the bridge that the woman jumped from. The height of the bridge was measured to be 3 metres, and eyewitnesses were interviewed on camera. The only factual information NOT reported was the woman's state of mind, which is unknown.

The answer is in the article but not perhaps obvious at first. "I can't die!" is a literal translation of the Japanese.
女性が「死ねない」"shinenai" と叫び声を上げたため...
She wanted to die and had thought that by jumping off the bridge that would do it. This is her expressing anger that her plan has not worked. "I want to die but it's not working." "Why can't I just die?"

Well done boys. Great to read a heartwarming story like this.

Good on them. While the proverb "Too many cooks spoils the broth" comes to mind when I read that 20 wrestlers marched to the rescue, the fact remains they did, and that a woman is alive very likely due to said efforts. And hey, they likely have a life-long fan, now.

It takes that many to rescue one woman? I thought they were stronger than that!
Kudos to the ordinary guy who rushed to save her, why isn’t he named and honoured?
NCIS Reruns
Ah yes, the Archimedes principle. The 20 behemoths dived into the river and its level rose, washing the distressed woman to safety.

Good for them!
Well done!

Japanese TV news now reports she was trying to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge. But then she yelled "I can't die", so she changed her mind. Lucky the sumo stable was next to the place she jumped.

I don't care how many it took to recue her, they are heros!
Even if the woman was trying to kill herself, she was really crying for help and now I hope she gets it. She's probably glad now she didn't die. Domo arigato, guys!

Love sumo wrestlers even more now...I understand how humor can be found by some here, but to anyone who would make fun, have you ever saved a life?
Mark
One lucky lady.
