A 22-month-old girl died after she was hit by a car driven by her father in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, on Sunday.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 2 p.m. in the parking lot of a ski ground, Fuji TV reported. Kazuki Togashi, 28, his wife, 33, and daughter Kokoa, who live in Seiro in Niigata prefecture, had come to the area to watch a car exhibition event.

Togashi left in his car to go shopping and when he returned to the parking area, he hit Kokoa with the front of his car. She was taken to hospital where she died about two hours later of head injuries.

Togashi was quoted by police as saying he didn’t see his daughter who appears to have been in a blind spot.

Where the hell was the mother? Letting a baby out of her sight.

Truly tragic and terrible for everyone but people here do trust some imaginary force where kids can scurry about all over the place and nothing bad will happen. Kind of like how Mums ride around corners without breaking as if they can see through walls. RIP, accidents do happen but many are avoidable by using common sense and logic.

That’s so sad. He’ll be haunted by this for rest of his life.

@martinblank - Vince makes a valid point!

So sick of how many kids are allowed to run wild through car parks here.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

This is not the time to judge the parents, even if we did know all the facts, which we don't. IF they were negligent, they will pay in the worst way imaginable, by feeling responsible for the death of their precious little girl for the rest of their lives. What heavy pain that only God himself could heal.

You can never be too careful with little kids and cars. You have to know where they are at all times.

We know a toddler was loose in a car park, and not being kept safe by a responsible adult.

If the child had not been hit by the car, there are any number of posters - we've seen them creeping about over on the corporal punishment threads - who would advocate hitting the toddler as punishment for running in front of traffic.

If this is not the time to judge the parents, when would be a suitable time?

they will pay in the worst way imaginable

They'll have a hard time, but it is little Kokoa who paid in the worst way possible.

So where was the mother ??? Why wasn't she holding on the her daughters hand in an area where their are vehicles in motion ??? Parenting at it's worst ...

he hit Kokoa with the front of his car.

I know there are blind spots on the sides to the rear of a vehicle - But not in front of a vehicle. Something smells fishy about this story. RIP Kokoa

Im starting to wonder if there are more car accidents recently or they're just being reported more in main stream news. Is there an agenda afloat?

That imaginary force in Japan is called heiwa bokke

RIP.

We don't know exactly what happened, but I must say that I see preschool children being allowed to run around in car parks all the time. I well understand the temptation to mention that here.

Personally I think the primary motivation is that because people (mothers) find active parenting mendo kusai, not that they think their children are safe. Stopping your child running around, settling them down so they will listen, and then trying to teach them something takes time and patience. It is work, just as is strapping your kid into a child seat or going into the sea with your kids and no letting them get more than a few meters from you. Some people clearly can't be bothered.

I feel so sorry for the poor girl and her parents. I can't imagine the pain the parents are going through, especially the father who was driving the car that hit her.

Horrible, very sad to hear. The father will never get over this and it will strain the marriage.

Emotions run high but that statement above is very true.

In some cases, incidents and accidents can occur due to unreliable thoughts and Imprudent actions.

Unfortunately, this case falls under it. It might seem like an outrageous opinion, but I wrote only the facts.

i see a lot of parents absorbed with their smartphones while their kids are running around. Hope this wasn't the case.

If he took the car to do some shopping, maybe the family were trying to keep the space reserved for him.
