This year's autumn rain front has been much more persistent than any I can remember in Kyushu.

Be careful and stay safe.

Please safe everyone.

I am in Osaka and I think this rain is a lot. It comes down really hard and then really light in shifts.

Kyushu just can't seem to get a break . . .
Luddite
The sheer volume of the rainfall is brutal.

As of 13:15 NHK is reporting 2 confirmed deaths and another discovered with no signs of life.
Take care, everyone!

agree.

We here in Kumamoto dodged a bullet. The rainfront is very narrow and concentrated - just a hundred kilometers south from their suffering, all we had was drizzle. Remember to look at the JMA radar: http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/index.html

As the rain pours down, the hillsides swell with water and landslips, landslides occur with little warning. Better safe than sorry.

why would you go for a drive when you know torrential flooding is on the way? The stupidity is mind-numbing

Sometimes people make lousy decisions. I know I've made my fair share. He paid with his life for his decision. Best wishes for his loved ones.

"Autumn rain front"? Autumn is generally dry and is six weeks away in terms of weather patterns. It's typhoon season.
This appears to be the new norm for Kyushu thanks to climate change.

And go where? Where or who has room for 1 million people?

Japanese cities all have evacuation areas, in preparation for situations like this. There are signs in each neighborhood that explain where the evacuation area (避難所 ひなんじょ hinanjo) is for that neighborhood is.

Out of talking with "traditionalist" Japanese, there seems to be more than the 4 seasons used in gregorian calendar. Found that in wiki :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_calendar#The_24_sekki
So it seems it is traditional autumn : Risshū (立秋): August 7—Beginning of autumn
I think it is interesting to have better understanding of Japan climate.
