The decaying bodies of three people have been found in an apartment in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture, police said Wednesday.
According to police, the bodies are believed to be those of a 76-year-old woman and her two sons, aged 52 and 49, who lived in the apartment, Fuji TV reported. The bodies were found at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said the apartment manager contacted them, saying he hadn't seen any of the family since late February.
When police arrived, the door was locked, but one living room window was unlocked. The manager let the police in and they found the three bodies. Police said that judging from the condition of the bodies, it appeared the trio had died several weeks ago.
The apartment showed no signs of having been ransacked and there were no signs of external injuries on any of the bodies, police said.

Sad story. But why do people always feel it necessary to throw in the snarky 'Saitama' comments? Above not a particularly bad example, but they are very noticeable. It is a prefecture close to Tokyo with a large population and an average income lower than Tokyo's (I am guessing), so isn't it inevitable that there will be a certain level of crime and social issues evidenced?

Very possible. Many years ago in Korea, I assisted in the investigation of the deaths of a base employee and his son at their home. While they were busy watching TV, somebody ran a hose into their house through a hole in a window and pumped in LP gas until they died.

I was kind of alluding to the fact there is increased usage of gas in the winter months but that's another possibility... At this stage I'll stick to accidental though.

Like SenseNotSoCommon said it is a real issue here, even if it is brushed under the rug a lot. Cos of my strange hours i often end up in super markets late at night and to see the people grabbing shamelessly all the 50% off food and looking a less than healthy in a fairly well off area of kobe is sad.
