Three members of a family were killed after a fire destroyed a three-story wooden home on Sado island, Niigata Prefecture, on Wednesday morning.
According to police, a neighbor called 119 at around 3:45 a.m. after seeing flames coming from the first floor of the home of Kohei Ikeda, 75, Fuji TV reported.
It took firefighters about seven hours to extinguish the blaze which also destroyed 15 buildings. Three bodies were found inside ― Ikeda, his wife Keiko, 73, and their son Satoshi, 45. They were taken to to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Satoshi, his wife and two children had been visiting his parents for the New Year holidays. Police said Satoshi’s wife and children were able to get out of the house uninjured.
