Police said Sunday that a mother and her two children were injured after a car plowed into a convenience store in Kishiwada, Osaka.
According to police, the accident occurred at a Lawson store in front of JR Higashi-Kishiwada Station at around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night. Fuji TV reported that a 42-year-old woman and her two sons, aged 12 and 13, were injured.
Police said that the driver of the car, a 55-year-old woman, told them she mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

Before I even read the article I knew that this was a "classic" case of mistaking the accelerator from the brake. I have driven well over 100 different types of vehicles for various jobs I've held over the years, and never have I been in a vehicle where brake and accelerator were close enough to "mistake".
We hear about these accidents all the time, but I'm really curious as to when/how they manage to plow into these combini. If they are pulling into a parking spot they should have their foot ready on the brake the entire time until they put their vehicle in park. Even if they are accelerating into the parking lot they would need to brake at some point in time. Do they mistake it by taking their foot off of the accelerator and then putting their foot back down in the exact same spot? I really can't understand how this problem is so common. Anyone who makes this "mistake" should have their license revoked.

A good idea would be to post a sight at stores requiring cars to back in not bed in.

Agree and it would be even easier and better if they were taught to reverse into a parking spot as is required in many countries.
Made even easier now with back and surround cameras.

IMO, This has to do with people who drive auto cars with both feet. I have driven an automatic car on and off for better than 40 years and never once have I mistaken the gas peddle from the brake. One uses the right foot for the brake and gas and so it is either on one or the other. Two feet drivers we have all seen from behind, brake light flashing on and off, well they are the ones gonna crash....

...because the break and accelerator pedals are so close together in an automatic car. Besides, how fast was she going to be able to do that and not avoid correcting her mistake?! Or was she stuggling to convert that last kanji in her email with one hand? Driving ban please.
