30 dogs perish in Ibaraki fire

Thirty dogs perished in a fire that destroyed a house in Joso, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Monday.

According to police, a neighbor alerted emergency services that a fire had broken out at the home of 76-year-old Fuyuo Kadoi at around 11:30 a.m. Monday. TBS reported that firefighters fought the blaze for around 30 minutes, during which time Kadoi's one-story bungalow and a large kennel in which breeding dogs were being housed, were burned to the ground.

No human casualties were reported, but 30 dogs, including Labrador Retrievers and Chihuahuas, were killed in the fire, police said.

Kadoi was quoted by police as saying he had been cooking tempura at his home using a portable gas stove and had left the room briefly, at which point the fire broke out and began to spread.

So tragic. I hope a proper inquiry is held as to whether anything could have been done to prevent this loss of life.

borax: well, basically the first rule of fire safety 101- never leave a flame unattended. Geezer is off his rockers.

Poor dogs.

Yomiuri Online is saying that the dogs were labs, chihuahuas and poodles, and that a few of them escaped. It also says that the old man 'went out' (外出した), which is not the same as 'left the room briefly'.

I would hate to see the aftermath of this fire. Feel sorry for all those dogs in theier last few minutes...must have been painful.

Greive for the property owner. Legal business, yes.

One 76 year old man with 30 dogs? There's the problem in a nut shell. Ibaraki prefecture is number one in number of homeless animals destroyed by local authorities. Breeders supplying pet shops in Tokyo is my guess. Look at the breeds mentioned in this article, labs, Chihuahuas, and Cleo mentioned poodles.

I can only machine the conditions these animals lived in.

The sound of gas catching alight? Woof!

He couldn't spare a few seconds to open one of the kennel doors before fleeing?

Poor doggies - they would have had a miserable life, packed together in a dog factory - and a horrifying death. Let's hope this stupid old man never gets hold of any more animals to mistreat.

The ugly side of dog ownership in Japan. Dog mills with senile managers. But childless couples just continue to pay for kawaii dogs without knowing the horrors behind it all.

Japanese don't seem to have much sympathy or concern for animals. They see animals as things to be exploited and discarded thereafter. Perhaps the country needs to focus on "Kawaiso" as much as the "Kawaii" part. If the government wants to deal with the issue of unwanted pets then regulations should be enforced at both ends; the buyers & the "puppy mills".

Note that this was a business, not just a someone with a lot of pets. The animals were basically fashion items, currently popular brands.

The lesson to learn from this is do not buy dogs from pet shops because, if you do, you are supporting this sort of business and share the blame for this sort of incident. There are plenty of nice healthy dogs available for free from shelters. They are probably much healthier than the inbred animals from puppy mill so often sold at pet shops.

These poor dog already had miserable lives - then they suffered (what i imagine to be) one of the most painful ways to die - the screams from the kennel on fire would have been heartbreaking

The loss of all those dogs is a tragedy, and there is a great deal of fault on the part of Mr. Kadoi, not being present while cooking. However to jump to the conclusions about dogs being mistreated, and having miserable lives is making insinuations that may not be true. Certain kennels are run like hotels, and the dogs in them are very well cared for, there was mention of "a large kennel in which breeding dogs were being housed", this man may be truly grieving for the loss of the dogs in his charge. Lighten up just a little!
