About 30,000 chickens and chicks perished in a fire at a chicken farm in Shirosato, Ibaraki Prefecture on Thursday night.
According to police, the fire broke out at around 6:30 p.m. at the farm in the Suzugoya district. Sankei Shimbun reported that three prefabricated two-story chicken coops -- approximately 3,000 square meters in area -- were destroyed.
No one was hurt in the fire as there were no employees on duty at the time. Police have not yet determined how the fire started.

An average of ten birds per square metre, more cramped if you allow for walkways. It should be criminal.
Kuribo1
Ten chicks can easily fit in a square meter, not all were adults in said square meter. Yet the point still has its meaning.

Cleo: It's hard to say because the article also states the coops were "two-story". So does that mean the buildings took up 3000 sqm? or the living quarters on both floors of each building added up to 3000sqm? If it was the buildings taking up 3000sqm, then with 2 floors, living quarters may not have been as cramped as you say. Plus, depending on the design of the coops, there could be even more room (ie. each individual coop could have 2 or 3 levels)... all I'm saying is that it's hard conclude without seeing the actual scene.
