Police in Shingumachi Midorigahama, Fukuoka Prefecture, said Sunday that 32 employees of a plant which produces bakery goods were sickened by a gas.
According to police, employees reported a foul odor and then complained of nausea at about 2 p.m. Saturday, Sankei Shimbun reported. In all, 32 men and women were taken to hospital to be treated, but none suffered any lingering effects.
Police said an investigation of the plant revealed that fluorocarbon refrigerants contained in the plant's airconditioners and cold rooms leaked and caused the employees to become ill.
About 200 workers were on duty at the plant at the time of the incident, police said.

Ammonia is commonly used as a refrigerant in the food industry. It has a low odor threshold and can cause individuals to become acutely ill.
